Man accused of drugging, sexually assaulting teen set for trial
A Fort Collins man accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a Longmont teen is set for trial.
Shane Waylen Jones, 40, pleaded not guilty Friday in Boulder District Court to sexual assault by force or threat, sexual assault of a child, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Jones is now set for a five-day trial starting March 27, with a motions hearing Feb. 7.
Jones, who appeared for the hearing remotely from the Boulder County Jail, agreed to extend the deadline on his speedy trial rights to accommodate the trial date.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the incident occurred May 7 when the staff at a multi-business building at 600 S. Airport Road was closing for the day and found a girl lying face down and unresponsive in a hallway.
Paramedics were called to the scene and found an approximately 15-year-old girl possibly suffering a seizure and rushed her to Longs Peak Hospital.
The next morning, the girl said Jones had been following her and making advances on her throughout the day he had ridden a bike from Fort Collins.
In a later interview, she said he had been trying to persuade her to smoke from a vape pen and that when she eventually agreed, things suddenly became foggy, according to the affidavit.
The girl said she awoke in the hospital weak, disoriented and worried about the possibility of being raped.
Nurses determined the victim had suffered minor internal scrapes and bruises, scrapes on her knee and back, and cuts on her hand. They stated her injuries were consistent with someone of her age enduring a sexual assault.
Police returned to the scene two days later, and through interviews with a nearby business owner and financial records, investigators were able to identify Jones through his debit card use.
The named victim picked a photo of Jones out of a photo array with 90% certainty, according to the affidavit.
