Burt Darmour was born in Cleveland, OH, on July 9, 1935 to John and Dorothy Darmour, the youngest of three sons. He spent his elementary school years attending public schools in Parma, OH and Westport, CT. In 1957, he graduated from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH with a BS degree in biology. Following graduation, Burt taught junior high school math and science for two years in Tiffin, OH, followed by two more years in
Longmont, CO. In 1963, he enrolled in the school of engineering at Colorado State University, graduating with high distinction in 1966 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. Following graduation from CSU, Burt held several engineering positions at the Flatiron Companies in Boulder, CO, followed by a short time working at the Rocky Flats nuclear facility. In 1969, he joined Prestressed Concrete of Colorado (which subsequently became Stanley Structures) as a design engineer. After positions as Plant Manager and General Manager in the Denver operation, he became Vice President of Operations for all operations of Stanley Structures in 1983. In 1988, after the sale of Stanley Structures, Burt spent the remainder of his career asa precast/prestressed concrete consultant. Consulting projects included the Pittsburgh International Airport from 1990-1991 and the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas from 1991-1992. He also had a brief consulting arrangement in Russia. Burt enjoyed his work in construction and had a hand in building five of his own Colorado homes, three in Boulder and two in Frisco.
Burt participated in sports throughout his life. He especially enjoyed bike trips with his wife and sons. He bicycled with his older son from Colorado to northern Minnesota and with his younger son from Colorado to southern Arizona. He and his wife enjoyed many travels over the years, including bicycling in New England and eastern Canada to see the fall colors. Burt also made four solo bike trips to school class reunions from his home in Colorado to Cleveland or Tiffin, OH. He completed his last solo cycling trip to Ohio at the age of 82.
After battling cancer for two years, Burt spent his last week surrounded by family at home. He passed away on July 28, 2022. He packed many building projects, travels, and as much laughter as he could into his 87 years of life.
Burt is survived by his wife, Sylvia, who was privileged to accompany him on his adventurous journey through life. They would have celebrated their 65th anniversary on August 24 of this year. Burt is also survived by his son Dave (Allison) and two grandchildren, Greta and Grant, as well as his second son. His two brothers, Kenneth and Curtiss, and a sister, Geraldine, preceded his passing.
Donations in Burt's memory may be made to the Colorado State University Foundation's Burt Darmour Scholarship Endowment Fund. The scholarship helps pay partial tuition to qualified Colorado students attending the CSU College of Engineering.
Family and friends of Burt are invited to join us to remember and celebrate his life on October 15, 2022. We will gather at the Boulder Country Club in Boulder, CO at 11:30 am to share memories of Burt.
