Broomfield rezones land for housing
New 40-unit development will be income-restricted
Broomfield officials approved two ordinances Tuesday regarding the new 40-unit, The Grove at Cottonwood, an income-restricted housing development planned for the Northmoor neighborhood.
The two ordinances, which include vacating the right of way of a cul-de-sac and rezoning the land slated for the development, passed in Tuesday night’s meeting 8-1. Ward 4 Councilmember Laurie Anderson opposed both ordinances.
City council members approved The Grove at Cottonwood last month. Of the 40 units, 25% will be dedicated to residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The remaining 75 percent of the units are set aside for residents who make less than 60 percent of the Broomfield area median income, or up to $52,140. Area median income limits are set by the federal government.
Anderson and multiple residents said the Northmoor neighborhood sidewalks are too narrow for residents using mobility or visual aids and that there are few crosswalks nearby.
In the Jan. 23 meeting, City and County Manager Jennifer Hoffman said that Broomfield does not have plans to widen the sidewalks in Northmoor. She said neither the city and county nor the developers of The Grove are required to widen sidewalks.
In other matters, the council also approved four ordinances concerning boards and commissions in the city and county, all of which passed unanimously. The ordinances allow changes to the municipal code to restructure and reallocate responsibilities of some boards and commissions.
The changes include removing required councilmember positions on all boards, excluding the Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability. The changes also include dissolving the Board of Equalization and transferring the board’s responsibilities to the city council.
