Stanford’s Vanderveer, NCAA wins record holder, retiring

Tara Vanderveer gave her time and energy to a young Dawn Staley behind the scenes years before the South Carolina coach started winning championships or delivering an improbable undefeated season.

The Hall of Fame Stanford coach did the same for her Pac-12 rivals.

For Cori Close. For Lindsay Gottlieb. For Charmin Smith. For Charli Turner Thorne. And for Kate Paye, who will become Vanderveer’s successor now that the 70-year-old women’s basketball pioneer is retiring.

The winningest basketball coach in NCAA history announced her retirement Tuesday night after 38 seasons leading the Stanford women’s team and 45 years overall. A news conference was scheduled for Wednesday.

Vanderveer surpassed Mike Krzyzewski for the wins record in January. She departs with 1,216 victories at Idaho, Ohio State and Stanford.

And as has been the plan for years, top Cardinal assistant Paye is set to take over the program; Stanford said in a statement that negotiations with Paye are underway. Paye played for Vanderveer from 199195 and has coached on her staff for 17 years.

Giannis to miss rest of Bucks’ regular season with calf injury

Giannis Antetokounmpo will miss the Milwaukee Bucks’ final three regular-season games after an MRI confirmed the initial diagnosis that the two-time MVP has a strained left calf.

The Bucks issued an update Wednesday regarding the injury that caused Antetokounmpo to leave late in the third quarter of the Bucks’ 104-91 victory over the Boston Celtics a night earlier. Bucks coach Doc Rivers had said after

The Bucks’ update didn’t make any predictions on Antetokounmpo’s potential availability for the beginning of the playoffs. The release simply said that “Antetokounmpo will miss the remaining three games of the regular season and receive daily treatment and evaluation.”

Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens called it a nobrainer to pursue Jrue Holiday when the five-time all-defensive selection was traded from Milwaukee to Portland as part of the deal that sent Damian Lillard to the Bucks.

After a breakout season in which Holiday has helped fortify the core of a Boston team that ran away with the NBA’S best regular-season record, Stevens isn’t letting Holiday go anywhere.

Holiday agreed to terms on a four-year, $135 million contract extension with the Celtics, his agent Jason Glushon confirmed Wednesday. As part of the deal, Holiday is declining his $37.5 million player option for next season.

The extension will keep him under contract through the 2027-28 season.

The 33-year-old Holiday has stepped into the void created this offseason when the Celtics parted with defensive stalwart Marcus Smart as part of the three-team trade that netted them Kristaps Porzingis.

A two-time All-star, Holiday has seen his scoring average drop to

12.5 points per game, his lowest output since his third season in the league in 2011-12. He’s shooting a career-best 43.1% from 3-point range and averaging a career-best 5.4 rebounds..

Jaguars sign top pass rusher Allen to 5-year, $150M deal

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end John Allen signed a five-year contract Wednesday that maxes out at $150 million and includes up to $88 million guaranteed, a person familiar with the negotiations said.

Allen received a $32 million signing bonus, and his $2 million base salary in 2024 is fully guaranteed. He will only count $11 million against the team’s salary cap this season, freeing up $13 million that general manager Trent Baalke could use to sign quarterback Trevor Lawrence to a long-term deal.

Allen set a single-season franchise record with 17½ sacks in the final year of his rookie contract and is 10 shy of the team’s career mark (55) held by Tony Brackens (19962003).
