City installs new bike lockers at Davis Train Station

- Democrat staff

The city of Davis is improving bike parking at the Davis Train Station with 12 additional BikeLink lockers.

These new lockers provide parking for bikes up to 84 inches long, which can serve many of the longer style bicycles. The new lockers are two-story and include a lift-assist to easily lift a bike into and out of the locker.

In addition to the new, two-story lockers there are 24 single-story bike lockers at the Train Depot. Look for new wayfinding at the train station to guide you to the single-story bike lockers on the west side of the station.

BikeLink lockers are available at most train stations along the Capitol Corridor.

To use a BikeLink locker, first purchase a BikeLink card at the Davis Train Station counter or at bikelink. org. The cost to store a bike is five cents an hour.

Parking a bicycle at a locker is safer than parking it at a rack and provides shelter from the weather, according to the city. The Davis Train Station also has 225 free bike rack parking spaces.

The total project cost was $46,416 with funding provided by a Caltrans Low Carbon Transit Grant and Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority.

City of Davis Mayor Gloria Partida said, “the City is grateful to receive this funding from Caltrans and CCJPA to provide more secure bike parking to our residents and visitors.”

Jennifer Donofrio, the city's Bike and Pedestrian coordinator, encourages people to use the lockers, because it is a safe place to park your bike and ensure it will be there upon your return.

However, for those who decide to park at a free bike rack, Donofrio recommends locking the frame and wheels. Also, consider using security bolts and removing all quick-releases, typically located on your seat post and wheels.

People should also remember to remove all valuables when leaving a bicycle.
