Prelim hearing for West Sac attempted murder suspect gets rescheduled
Bugreyev arrested 5 times since Aug. 26
The preliminary hearing for West Sacramento resident Denis Bugreyev, who has been charged with attempted murder and faces a weapons enhancement for use of a knife and inflicting great bodily injury, was rescheduled Thursday.
When he was arrested by West Sacramento Police on Sept. 15, Bugreyev, 25, was also charged with battery causing serious bodily injury and use of a knife.
At Bugreyev’s Thursday preliminary hearing, Judge David Rosenberg agreed to rescheduling for the end of October, on the grounds that Deputy Public Defender Joseph Gocke is still “awaiting significant discovery” on the case and also completing his own investigation.
Deputy District Attorney Preston Schaub agreed but stayed firm in rescheduling within four weeks.
“The reason I’m being aggressive with (the timeline) is the alleged victim in this case is no longer seeking medical treatment and is also transient in the area,” Schaub said. “I have safety and medical issues with her.”
Schaub added he’d like to get the victim for a preliminary hearing or a conditional examination as soon as possible.
The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office reported on Burgreyev as part of its continuing release of information about people who have been rearrested as a result of California’s Emergency $0 Bail Schedule, which calls for the release of inmates to avoid spreading the coronavirus in local jails and prisons.
In June, the Judicial Council rescinded its order mandating the Emergency Bail Schedule, however, the Yolo County Superior Court continues to use it, according to the DA’s Office.
On Aug. 18, Bugreyev was placed on felony probation after being convicted in Yolo County for assault by means of force causing great bodily injury. According to the DA’s Office, he was arrested five times between the time he was first placed on probation and his arrest for attempted murder.
A week after being placed on probation, Bugreyev was arrested by West Sac PD for felony possession of a concealed dirk or dagger, and giving a false name to a peace officer. He was then released on $0 bail on Aug. 26.
The following day, Bugreyev was arrested for public intoxication and released with a notice to appear in court. On Aug. 28, he violated the court order and was arrested and released the same day with notice to appear.
On Sept. 1, Bugreyev was arrested for violation of a court order and again released the same day with a notice to appear.
Following his Sept. 15 arrest, Bugreyev remained in custody with bail set. He was arraigned on Sept. 17 in Department 1 of the Yolo County Superior Court on multiple charges.
The first count alleged attempted murder, use of a knife, inflicting great bodily injury, and battery causing serious bodily injury with use of a knife stemming from the Sept. 15 arrest.
The second count alleged felony stalking, which is alleged to have occurred between Aug.19 and Sept. 13, as well as six counts of violating a court order.
The third count alleged possession of a concealed dirk or dagger and giving a false name to a peace office from Aug. 25. He was also arraigned on a violation of probation.
Bugreyev entered a not guilty plea and his next court date is set for Oct. 27 in Department 14 for the rescheduled preliminary hearing.
