A Woodland man apparently attempted to commit suicide at Fire Station No. 2 on South West Street Sunday morning.

Although the man was reported to be in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head, no firefighters were hurt during the incident which was reported at 10: 06 a. m. The man was not yet been identified.

According to initial reports, the man — who was said by police to be 44 years old — walked to the front door of the station house, which faces West Street, and rang the bell. The man put a handgun to his head and pulled the trigger when a firefighter approached to open the door.

Firefighters removed the weapon and began treatment prior to the arrival of police, who were on scene in minutes. Ambulance personnel were also notified as was a REACH rescue helicopter.

However, due to foggy weather, it was decided to transport the shooting victim to the UC Davis Medical Center by ambulance with a firefighter onboard to assist in treatment. The victim’s current condition was not known, although he was reported by police on Sunday morning to be in critical condition.

The fire station is located at 1619 West St., on the northeast corner of West and El Dorado Drive. Unconfirmed reports from the scene were that the man walked east across West Street and toward the fire station’s front door where he rang the bell and then shot himself when he saw a firefighter.

Police remained on scene until around 11 a. m. gathering information.
