A pair of accidents on Sunday — one near Zamora and the other in Davis — claimed the lives of a motorist and a pedestrian.

Information on the incidents was delayed in being reported due to the New Year’s holiday.

In the first accident, the California Highway Patrol reported a driver died in a rollover crash around 2: 30 p. m. Sunday near Zamora.

According to the CHP, the vehicle was traveling in the southbound lane when for a still undetermined reason, the driver lost control of his SUV and spun out across the median and into the northbound lane. As the SUV was careening out of control, the driver was thrown out of the vehicle. His passenger, a woman, remained inside the vehicle.

The vehicle came to a stop in the northbound lane and narrowly avoided being hit by another motorist who was able to stop his vehicle just in time and “barely touched” the SUV as it came to a stop.

The driver of that second vehicle remained on scene to assist the CHP as it gathered information.

A Lifef light helicopter was dispatched to the scene as Zamora firefighters attempted to save the life of the driver, but they were unsuccessful and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. There was no information on the condition of the woman passenger.

In the second accident, Davis police have now reported that they have made an arrest in the death of a pedestrian, who was struck and killed during a vehicular hit- and- run on Sunday night around 8 o’clock on Olive Drive near Richards Boulevard.

The male pedestrian died at the scene.

Late Monday, police reported they had arrested Scott Bryan Ekoniak, 46, of Davis, who was booked into the Yolo County Jail on suspicion of felony hit and run. Davis police reported they found Ekoniak and his vehicle, a pickup, in Sacramento.

The original crash closed the roadways for several hours.
