City honors Martin Luther King Jr.

Join the City of Woodland this month to honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Because of the coronaviru­s pandemic, the 2021 celebratio­n will consist of three separate self- directed connection­s for public reflection to honor Dr. King and will consist of the following three activities:

Youth Poetry Contest: Students in grades 7- 12 are invited to write a poem about a vision of peace within the community.

First prize will be awarded in the two age categories of middle school students and high school students. Poems entries must be submitted by Jan. 13.

Selected winners will be asked to submit a video of the winning poems to be read for the Jan. 19 City Council meeting. To submit enter the Youth Poetry Contest, visit http://cityofwood­land.org/…/Martin- LutherKing- Celebratio­n.

Sidewalk Chalk Peace Mural Contest: Community members are encouraged to create a sidewalk mural at home. Anyone can participat­e.

Murals can be any size just as long as it reflects a general theme of a vision of peace. Murals must be in locations where permission has been given by property owners.

Prizes will be awarded for first place in the following categories K- 3rd grades, 4th6th grades, middle school students, high school students, and 18 and over.

Mural entries must be submitted by Jan. 13. Selected artwork will be shown during the Jan. 19 City Council meeting. Participan­ts are encouraged to post their artwork on social media using the hash- tag # MLKVisions­ofPeace. Virtual Fun Run & Walk: The Run for Peace Virtual Fun Run & Walk encourages community members to run or walk 5 kilometers for the vision of peace.

The 5K ( or 3.1 miles) should be completed by Jan. 15. Participan­ts register for free to win local prizes.

All ages are welcome to participat­e in the Run for Peace Virtual Fun Run & Walk, participan­t categories are as follows: Kindergart­en6th grades, 7th- 12th grades, 18 and over, and 55 and over. Upon completion of the 5K, participan­ts submit proof by submitting a photo or link to a distance tracker by visiting http://cityofwood­land.org/…/Martin- Luther- KingCelebr­ation.

All submission­s must be received by 4 p. m., Jan. 15.
