James “Jim” Marshall

January 11, 1939 – March 19, 2021 Woodland, CA

-

James “Jim” Marshall passed away on March 19, 2021 at the age of 82 with his family by his side. He will be missed as the strong, quiet center of the Marshall family. Born in 1939 to the late Edward Ernest Marshall & Kathleen (McClellin) in Fairfield, CA, Jim graduated from Esparto Union High School and joined the United States Army. Jim served between the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was proud of his adventures “guarding bridges”. After his service, Jim made Woodland, CA his home. He met his wife, MaryAnn, while square dancing which surprises many when the story is told. Jim & MaryAnn were married for 51 years and raised four children: Andrew, Michael, Traci and Kelly. Jim worked as an Equipment Mechanic for the City of Woodland for 33 years before his retirement in 2001. He was a common fixture at Holy Rosary Elementary where his children went to school, exceeding the requisite parental volunteer hours by far and earning an honorary position. The strong silent type, Jim was a man of few words. He made up for that with his acerbic wit and dry sense of humor. He traveled the world as a young man and often stated that meant he earned the right to stay home in his favorite chair and watch Westerns or Lord of the Dance or root for the underdog in whichever sport was on TV. Jim loved a good game of poker but was also known to sit in on the occasional Bunco game. He was a man for order and efficiency and routine. He did not like to be hot, so the family home came to be known as the Ice Box. He had an affinity for hummingbirds and made a hobby out of entreating them to visit his ever-expanding garden of tomatoes and various flowers. Jim was proud of his family and adored his grandchildren. Jim is survived by his wife of 51 years, MaryAnn, their children Andrew Marshall, Michael Marshall, Traci (Marshall) Misquez and Kelly Marshall, Daughter in Law Charlene Marshall, Son in Law Brett Misquez and, his grandchildren: Lillian Misquez, Nicole (Demmon) Rodriguez, Savannah (Demmon) Arreola, Chance Demmon and Alice Arreola. He is also survived by his siblings Don Marshall, Louise (Marshall) Cheney and Stan Marshall. A memorial service will be held on March 30th at Holy Rosary Church at 301 Walnut Street, Woodland, CA at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Holy Rosary School Foundation.
