Two Giants are Gold Glove finalists for NL

The San Diego Padres have hired Bob Melvin from the Oakland Athletics as their new manager, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

The person spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the hiring hadn’t been officially announced. The 60-yearold Melvin will receive a threeyear deal, the person said.

Melvin replaces Jayce Tingler, who was fired Oct. 6 after a brutal second-half collapse dropped the Padres from a solid grip on the NL’s second wild card spot to finishing with a losing record for the 10th time in 11 seasons.

Melvin became the winningest manager in Oakland team history this year, but the A’s missed the playoffs following three straight postseason berths and was 853764. He has a 1,346-1,272 managerial record overall with Seattle, Arizona and the A’s.

GIANTS’ CRAWFORD, YASTRZEMSKI NAMED FINALISTS FOR NL GOLD GLOVE AWARD » Brandon Crawford may have made the Giants’ catch of the year during the postseason, but his regular-season glovework wasn’t too shabby, either.

He was named a finalist Thursday for the NL’s Gold Glove Award at the shortstop position alongside fellow finalists Francisco Lindor of the Mets and Kevin Newman of the Pirates.

Crawford already has three Gold Gloves to his name, won in consecutive years from 2015-17, and he had a general resurgence in his age-34 season this year, earning the third All-Star nod of the season.

The Bay Area native’s shining moment from 2021 came in Game 3 of the National League Divisional Series against the Dodgers, when he leapt to catch a scorching line drive from Mookie Betts to end the seventh inning with two runners on base.

Beyond that single moment, Crawford was solid with the glove throughout the Giants’ 107win season. He matched a career high with a .983 fielding percent

age, though advanced fielding metrics placed him in the bottom half of shortstops league-wide.

Joining Crawford as a Giants Gold Glove finalist is Mike Yastrzemski, who is one of three right fielders in the running. The aforementioned Betts and former San Francisco draft pick Adam Duvall are the other finalists.

Yastrzemski started 90 games in right field this season, though with manager Gabe Kapler’s frequent substitutions and positional changes, he played in 127 games total. He recorded career highs in fielding percentage (.996) and defensive assists (3), though advanced metrics rated him below-average, as well.

The winners of the Gold Glove Awards, as voted by MLB managers and coaches with input from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), will be announced next week. SPORTING NEWS RECOGNIZES 3 GIANTS » Three other San Francisco contributors were honored Thursday morning.

Sporting News named Buster Posey its comeback player of the year for his resurgence after a year off in 2020. Posey was named to his seventh All-Star team and slashed .304/.390/.499 with 23 home runs this year.

The news publication also honored Kapler and Farhan Zaidi as the NL manager and MLB executive of the year, respectively.
