Now that Picnic Day — the annual open house at UC Davis is set for its grand return to an inperson event on April 23, 2022 — the theme of “Rediscovering Tomorrow” has been selected.

The theme, chosen by the 12-student Board of Directors for Picnic Day, was announced at a campus reception on Nov. 5.

“We selected ‘Rediscovering Tomorrow’ because right now, everyone has the opportunity to rediscover what their future holds,” said Picnic Day Chair Amanda Portier.

“Our campus continues to embrace this opportunity while bringing our UC Davis community back in-person,” she added. “With the first in-person Picnic Day in two years, every attendee can experience Picnic Day with fresh eyes and rediscover their tomorrow at the event.”

This theme honors Picnic Day 106 and 107, which because of the pandemic, were celebrated virtually with the themes “Envisioning Tomorrow” and “Discovering Silver Linings,” respectively. While recognizing Picnic Day’s past, “this year’s theme is intended to inspire hope among our community,” Portier added.

“I am excited to bring Picnic Day back in person this year,” said Picnic Day Vice-Chair Jesse Goodman. “Throughout our planning, we are reflecting on past experiences to bring Picnic Day into the future in new and creative ways.”

The Picnic Day Board will announce a Parade Marshal who exemplifies this theme with their work and contributions to the Davis community at a later date.

Picnic Day is one of the largest student-run events in the nation. This hallmark event showcases and celebrates the richness of campus life; highlights the diverse achievements of UC Davis students, staff, and faculty; and provides a day of education, information, and entertainment. The day’s events include fun for the whole family with a children’s fair, musical and dance performances, educational exhibits, and sporting events.

While a date is set, Portier is still unsure of what April 2022 will look like. However, she anticipates mask mandates will still be in place, so everyone will have to wear a mask if the school

hosts indoor events.

“We will be trying to maintain social distancing as much as possible,” Portier said. “Fortunately, a lot of Picnic Day already is outdoors. I think more information will come out as campus policies and things go along throughout the year, and we will promote those on our website so people can know exactly what they can expect.”

Events-wise, the board is still collecting feedback and gauging what people want this year’s events to look like. Once all the feedback is collected, they will implement it into their planning process.

A lot will ultimately depend on the participants and their creativity.
