Library hosts next installment in discussion series
The public is invited to the Woodland Public Library’s Thursday evening discussion, “Challenges Facing the U.S. Press in Covering Politics,” with UC Davis Professor, Amber Boydstun. This event is the latest installment in the Public Library’s Science and Society Discussion Series.
The event begins at 7 p.m. To attend, email the library at science.library@cityofwoodland.org to receive a Zoom link.
The discussion will focus on how the “rules of the game” have changed in America’s media landscape as well as some of the key challenges facing journalists in providing quality coverage of U.S. politics.
The Science and Society Discussion Series is a public forum hosted by the Woodland Public Library where the public and experts from different fields come together to discuss complex and controversial issues at the intersection of scientific knowledge and civic life that illustrate the challenges for public policymaking. The sessions provide opportunities for the public and those engaged in research and policymaking to share ideas and concerns.
Boydstun is a professor of political science and a chancellor’s fellow at the UC Davis. She uses lab experiments, large-scale media studies, and manual and computational text analysis to study how issues make the news, how issues are framed in the news, and how media attention and framing influences public opinion. She has authored two books and many journal articles, as well as articles for the popular press, such as The Washington Post and the Columbia Journalism Review.
