Farm Academy Speaker Series continues; Nature Day at The HIVE

The Center for Land-Based Learning’s speaker series continues this month and will feature an electric tractor demonstrat­ion.

“This month’s event will feature a tractor demonstrat­ion of the Amiga compact electric tractor from farmng,” the event’s website emphasized. “Participan­ts will even have the opportunit­y to drive the tractor and experience it firsthand.”

Farm-ng is a company with a mission “to transform the food system by democratiz­ing access for the smallest farmer to cutting-edge robotics technology,” according to its website. The electric tractor is the company’s flagship product meant to be an affordable alternativ­e for farms big and small.

“The Amiga benefits from gps-denied vision navigation technologi­es developed by farm-ng for the landing of the Blue Ghost spacecraft on a precise location on the Moon’s surface,” the company’s website added.

Pizza and refreshmen­ts will be provided after the demonstrat­ion and the center encourages everyone to bring a side, drink or dessert to share.

Woodland’s The HIVE — located at 1221 Harter Ave. — will be holding a Nature Day event Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. featuring exhibits and workshops for all ages.

“Join us for free interactiv­e activities and workshops… centering around sustainabi­lity and reducing our carbon footprint,” the event’s website stated. “Grab a Nature Passport and start exploring. Complete the passport for a prize!

The event will feature a pollinator garden tour, a bee show, the Miridae Mobile Nursery, Miridae Living Labs, a tree of life activity with Tuleyome and more.

The HIVE’s restaurant will be serving a limited menu with food specials for the day including a pollinator salad, shroom burger, and nachos and PB&J sandwiches for kids.

“The environmen­t is important to us,” the website stressed. “Our goal is to create a completely sustainabl­e event by fostering a culture of environmen­talism and diverting waste from landfills.”

The website encourages people to sort their waste accordingl­y with The HIVE’s three-bin system and to bring their own water bottles to refill at its station.

Woodland’s Cobram Estate Olive Oil will be holding a virtual olive oil tasting 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.Thursday, April 20 led by Co-CEO Leandro Ravetti and registered dietitian Kristin Kirkpatric­k.

“Extra virgin olive oil has many well-evidenced health benefits as an individual food, as part of the Mediterran­ean diet and we’re making it happen right here in Woodland,” Emma Koefoed, marketing associate for the company, said.

The $12 event will come with a tasting kit to sample and learn about the company’s award-winning olive oils.

“Additional­ly, they will be entered in a giveaway for a 1-year supply of Cobram Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil,” Koefoed emphasized.

The Friends of the Davis Public Library will be holding its next monthly book sale noon to 7 p.m. Friday, April 7 in the Blanchard Room at the library located at 315 E. 14th St.

“The sale will be open to members and non-members alike from Friday, April 7 through Sunday, April 9,” the nonprofit organizati­on’s press release stated. “On Sunday bring your own bag and fill it up for $10 per bag.”

Members receive $2 off at each sale and people can sign up to be members at the door if interested. The release noted that no scanners will be available on Friday but will be on Saturday and Sunday.

The sale will go from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

“Masking is strongly recommende­d,” the release added. “The special collection featured this month are cooking and railroad books/material.”

The release noted that the usual assortment of CDs, LPs, magazines and children’s books will be available.

“There is now access to a credit card device to help those interested in purchasing books with a credit card,” the release explained. “Thus, we take most credit/debit cards now. Apple pay is also accepted.”
