New exhibits at the Artery and Pence Gallery

- Center Stage is a column exploring the arts in and around Yolo County.

The Village Homes Performers’ Circle in Davis will feature Gabe Lewin as the main act for the April 25 performance.

Lewin is set to perform with support from Bob Lindley on violin and mandolin and Ted Fontaine on bass and vocals, according to a press release. The performance is set to include original and cover songs that are “tender, moving and humorous.” Themes will vary from the plight of the coal miner and poor farmer to broken hearts and true love.

Lewin said he has been singing as long as he has been walking, picking up his first guitar at 13 and eventually learning the harmonica as a young adult. His first professional stage appearance was at The Troubadour in South Africa. In South Africa he learned a variety of musical styles including old folk standards, new folk tunes, reggae, bluegrass and classic rock blues.

Since moving to Davis, Lewin has played at E Street Plaza, Davis Commons, Sudwerks Brewing Company, Father Paddy’s Pub in Woodland, the Picnic Day main stage, International House, Pieter and Jeanne Pastoor’s radio show on KDRT and as a regular at the Performer’s Circle open mic.

As the owner/operator of Clarity Sound, Gabe is also familiar as a sound system provider at events such as Celebrate Davis, Co-op Community Meal and the Yolo County Fair.

The event will begin with the open mic from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. with the featured performance taking the stage from 8:30 to 9 p.m. Signups will begin at 6:45 p.m. The event is free and welcomes performers of all levels.

The Village Homes Performers’ Circle will be held inside the Village Homes Community Center, located at 2661 Portage Bay East in Davis.

The Artery is set to present “Clay Artists” which will feature the work of Emma Luna, Magdalene Crivelli and Liz Webb.

Luna will show her Trompe L’oeil or visual illusion ceramic art in a threedimensional form. Her sculpture reproduces everyday fabric objects such as washcloths and terry cloths, utilizing the illusionistic possibilities inherent in clay.

Crivelli’s work features the female figure. In this show, she focuses on water and swimming. Each piece suggests a story that allows the viewer to connect to the work by filling in their own experiences.

Webb’s current pieces are small figures that embody quiet moments. The figures are typically set into frames that hold each piece in its own space like an illustration from an old book such as a fairy tale.

The exhibit is scheduled to open at the Artery on April 28 and continue through May 23. An opening reception will also take place on April 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. to coincide with the California Clay Conference being held in Davis.

Featuring the captivating watercolor paintings of Dawn Star Wood, “Wandering Thoughts” portrays the dreamy interior world of women lost in thought or asleep, complete with stars, moons and other signs of the cosmos.

“She also finds equal inspiration in subjects like vintage cars, motorcycles and advertisements, of which she paints close-up views that show her skill at capturing reflection, rust and age,” the Pence’s website said. “These images create a world that is at once magic and real, spurring us as viewers to delve further into its beauty and mystery as seamlessly articulated by the artist.”

“Wandering Thoughts” will be on display at the Pence Gallery in Davis from May 5 to June 23. The opening reception will take place May 12 from 6 to 9 p.m.
