NorCal Celtic Festival in Woodland, California Duck Days returns

-

Woodland will host the NorCal Celtic Festival this Saturday to celebrate Scottish and Celtic culture. The 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. free festival will showcase Celtic culture through music, dance and food featuring the Scottish Highland Dance Sacramento Valley Championships, kilted pipe bands, solo pipers, drummers and more along Main Street.

Al Eby, founder and director of the California Honey Festival, helped organize the event with the goal of bringing more people to Woodland and showcasing the community.

“I’ve been in this town for so long and I’ve been through the phases where downtown was struggling to keep businesses open and not change all the time, so having events like this and making Woodland a true destination, a reason to come to Woodland, is so important,” he emphasized. “It’s just so important to have many events and getting people into our community to find out what Woodland is about.”

The Winters Youth Day Parade and Festival will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday featuring a rotary pancake breakfast, a kids fair, music and more.

“Winters Youth Day was founded in 1933 by Reverend Charles P. Barkman and High School Principal Dr. A.M. Herron to teach young people the aspects of city government,” the event’s website stated. “Each year the young people of Winters take over the elected offices of the city.”

The website added that after a week of hands-on experience, everyone is honored during the annual parade with a “day full of fun.”

A rotary pancake breakfast will kick off the event at the Winters Community Center located at 201 Railroad Ave. followed by a “Kiddie Parade” at 9:45 a.m. on Main Street.

The main parade will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Main Street and festivities will continue after that including a kids’ fair, live music, food vendors and parade awards at 2 p.m. at the City Hall Stage.

• Yolo Basin Foundation’s California Duck Days will return this Saturday welcoming people to participate in workshops and activities highlighting Northern California’s wetlands and wildlife.

“California Duck Days is a family-oriented, community-based outdoor festival with activities for people of all ages,” the event’s website stated. “On-site activities for families include interactive exhibits, wetlandthemed arts and crafts and much more.”

The 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. event will take place at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area — located at 45211 County Road 32B — and will feature food trucks onsite serving burgers, loaded fries, vegetarian options and desserts.

Last year’s festival welcomed dozens of families to what Martha Diepenbrock, executive director of the foundation, said was an important way to introduce the local wetlands to the community.

“It’s typically a time to celebrate the birds that migrate here along the Pacific Flyway,” she explained. “It’s a way to bring awareness of the importance of these local wetlands as a stop for the migratory birds on their way to and from.”
