Richard E. Gould

1952 – 2023 Woodland

-

Richard Gould of Woodland, CA. died peacefully of leukemia at Mercy General Hospital on June 8th. He had the continuous love & support of his immediate family, and they surrounded him with that love during his last several days.

Rick was born in Yuba City, CA. the son of Robert & Mary Lee Gould. He graduated from Yuba City High School & participated in tennis, golf, and basketball. Rick graduated from CSU, Sacramento with a degree in Microbiology, later furthering his education in Virology & Immunology at UC Davis.

As a young child Rick enjoyed golf, tennis, archery, baseball, camping, boating, and fishing, as well as watching his dad design, build, fix, & fabricate tools, machines, & “stuff.” As a master craftsman, he carved & painted decoys and built guitars, amps, furniture, & boats.

Rick is survived by his wife of 41 years, Doreen, and his 3 beloved children, Laura Perry (Scott); Zach Gould (Laura); Carrie Zurn (Stuart); and 11 adoring grandchildren: Finn, Gavin, and Brighton Perry; Logan, Evie, Ari, and Tristan Gould; Owen, Katie, Annie, and Robbie Zurn. He is also survived by his sister, Rhonda Leath, and many nieces, nephews, & lifelong friends.

Rick was a man with keen intellect, humor and wit and had a wide range of interests. He was an avid reader (1-2 books weekly). He was a self-taught musician & played one of his many acoustic or electric guitars daily which brought him endless joy. While sailing, fly fishing, music, & woodworking projects filled his days during retirement, family always filled his heart.

As a Research Scientist, he worked at UC Davis Primate Center; UC Davis Immunology Dept.; Calypte Biomedical, Berkeley; Aphton Corp.; and Antibodies Inc. His research projects included HIV and AIDS research, lung & pulmonary cancer, strep & giardia diagnostic test kits, tissue cell cultures, and Blastocystis. Rick was inspired by mentors & lab colleagues alike, & was proud to collaborate through the years with NIH, FDA, USDA, & Shriners Hospital.

Rick’s work in the field of monoclonal antibodies was extensive. Once diagnosed with leukemia, this knowledge gave him a full understanding of his disease & the importance of antibodies in developing new cancer treatments. Our family will forever be grateful for the specialized care & treatment he received from the dedicated Clinicians at Woodland Clinic, Mercy Hospital, UC Davis Cancer Center, and especially to Dr. Alborz Alali “for everything” during the last eight years.

Rick Gould, Beloved Husband, Dad, Grandpa, and Friend.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 30th. Please contact family directly for information. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, or PAN Foundation.
