New transit hub under way in Poughkeepsie
Ulster site in Kingston has yet to be chosen
POUGHKEEPSIE — Dutchess County and Poughkeepsie city officials Friday broke ground for a new transit hub in the city.
The facility will be located just south of the Financial Plaza Deck on Civic Center Plaza along Market Street.
The city has received over $2 million in grant funding to complete the project. Mayor John Tkazyik said it will be completed by late fall of this year.
“THE TRANSIT hub will include passenger shelters, communications, transportation service monitors, and it will serve as connection as well between the Walkway and our downtown area,” Tkazyik said, adding it will be a beautiful addition to the city’s landscape and another great improvement to the downtown area.
Ulster County has been considering creation of a transit hub in the city of Kingston since 2007, but has yet to pick a site.
DUTCHESS County Executive Marc Molinaro said his county is excited to see revitalization in areas of Poughkeepsie, especially along the river.
“WE RECOGNIZE that the success of the city of Poughkeepsie and the prosperity of the city of Poughkeepsie is very much aligned with the success of Dutchess County and, without Poughkeepsie’s prosperity, we can’t truly say that we have an overall terrific quality of life,” Molinaro said.
The county and city are also exploring the possibility of merging the city’s transit bus system with the county’s LOOP system.
