MHAL scholar-athletes honored

KINGSTON — The MidHudson Athletic League selected its Scholar-Athletes for 2013, with two representa­tives picked from each member school.

The league also presented the Senior Athlete Scholarshi­p Award to Maureen Ball from Saugerties and Michael Ryman from Ellenville.

Receiving Senior Sportsmans­hip Awards, meanwhile, were New Paltz’s Eric Januszkiew­icz and Ellenville’s Kimberly Craft. COLEMAN CATHOLIC Aimei Lund ranked eighth in her class and played three years for the Stateswome­n girls golf team, two on girls soccer and two on track. She is a member of National Honor Society, was team captain for golf and soccer and earned the University of Rochester Eastman Young Leaders Award. Lund plans to attend Penn State University.

Joseph Spano, a four-year member of the Statesmen boys soccer team and two years on the baseball team, ranked 18th in his class. He is a member of National Honor Society, was team captain for soccer and

served as a life guard. He is attending SUNY Delhi to major in heating, ventilatio­n and air conditioni­ng.

DOVER Julia Sciortino played three years for the Drag-- ons girls soccer team and two for softball. She ranks fourth in her class as a member of National Honor Society, team captain of the soccer team, president of student council and part of band community. Sciortino is majoring in athletic finance at Binghamton University.

Elijah Vincent, ranked 24th, is a threeyear member of the football and baseball teams, and played two years on the basketball team. His other achievemen­ts include baseball and basketball Dragon Awards, Boys State and football Special Teams Award. He plans to attend John Jay College to study forensic psychology and criminolog­y.

ELLENVILLE Kimberly Craft is the class salutatori­an and played three years on the Lady Devils girls soccer, basketball and softball teams. She is a member of National Honor Society, Key Club and an Elementary tutor. Craft is majoring in athletic training at Union College.

Michael Ryman ranked 14th in his class and was four-year player on the Blue Devils boys tennis team. He also played two years on the basketball team and ran spring track, along with one year on indoor track. He was tennis co-captain, member of National Honor Society, Chorus, Boys State, Key Club and a basketball mentor. Ryman is going to Embry-Riddle Aeronautic­al University to study aerospace engineerin­g.

HIGHLAND Gabrielle Lichtenste­in, the class salutatori- an, was a four-year member of the Huskies girls tennis team. She is a member of National Honor Society, Math team, Interact Club, and a Coronat Scholar at Syracuse University. Lichtenste­in will attend Syracuse to study internatio­nal relations.

Pratool Gadtaula is the valedictor­ian of his class, playing four years on the Huskies boys tennis team and three with cross country. He is a member of National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl team, French Honor Society and RPI medalist. Gadtaula is attending Olin College to study engineerin­g.

MARLBORO Georgia Houghton, the class valedictor­ian, spent four years on the Lady Dukes cross country, spring track and indoor track teams. She is a member of National Honor Society, Band, Mock Trial, served as Chemistry tutor and was team captain for all three sports, Houghton is majoring in chemical engineerin­g at Northeaste­rn University.

Adam Laubach, who ranks 11th in his class, played four years on the Iron Dukes boys soccer team and one on the football team. He is a member of National Honor Society and French Club, and won an RPI Innovation & Creativity Award. Laubach is going to Syracuse University to study sports management.

MILLBROOK Kyla Karten ranks eighth in her class, participat­ing for six years on the Blazers spring and indoor track teams, as well as four years on cross country and girls soccer. She is a member of National Honor Society, Band, Environmen­tal Club and was a team captain for track and cross country. Karten plans to study engineerin­g at California Polytechni­c State University.

Connor Kyle ranks ninth in his class, spending four years on the Blazers baseball team, two on the football team, and one year each on soccer and basketball. He is vice president of National Honor Society and a member of Band. Kyle is going to Buffalo State to major in engineerin­g.

NEW PALTZ Cora Butler is the class salutatori­an and was a four-year member of the Huguenots girls soccer and spring track teams, and spent a year on the basketball team. She is a member of National Honor Society, 4H Club, Spanish Club and played travel soccer. Butler is majoring in architectu­re at the University of Pennsylvan­ia.

Eric Januszkiew­icz ranks third in his class, competing five years on the Huguenots wrestling team, three on boys soccer and one on boys tennis. He is a member of National Honor Society, was team captain for wrestling and soccer and earned a U.S. Army & Air Force Science award. Januszkiew­icz will study biology at East Stroudsbur­g University.

ONTEORA Anna Weissman is the class salutatori­an, having participat­e four years on the Indians spring track team, and three on both the indoor track and girls soccer team. She is a member of National Honor Society, Band, Rotary Youth Exchange, was Senior Class president and team captain of the soccer team. Weissman is attending Tufts University to study mathematic­s or political science.

Myan McCann, ranked 14th in his class, played four years on the Indians boys tennis team and two on boys soccer. He was a member of Band, was team captain for both sports and volunteere­d at Zena Elementary School. McCann is going to University of California-Santa Cruz to major in science, technology, engineerin­g (STEM).

PINE PLAINS Kiersten Barr is the class valedictor­ian and spent six years on the Bombers spring and indoor track teams, and four on girls soccer. She is a member of National Honor Society, March- ing Band, SADD and was team captain for all three sports. Barr is going to the University of Vermont to major in mathematic­s education.

Alejandro Ayala ranks eighth in his class and ran five years on spring track, four years on the Bombers boys soccer team, two on indoor track and one on basketball. He is a member of Math Honor Society, Band, IBM Computer Club and was team captain for soccer. Ayala plans to study business administra­tion at Providence College.

RED HOOK Ashley Pica is the class salutatori­an and played three years for the Raiders girls soccer team, two for softball and one on the basketball team. She is a member of National Honor Society, Kids Night Out volunteer and Blood Drive volunteer. Pica is going to Villanova University to study chemistry.

Michael Jankowiak, ranked 19th in his class, spent four years on the Raiders cross country and spring track teams. He is a member of National Honor Society, Jazz Band, was team captain for both teams, Church Musician, and a Presidenti­al Scholar for University at Albany. He is attending Albany to study business and accounting.

RHINEBECK Catherine Ely played three years on the Hawks softball team and one on the volleyball team. She is a member of National Honor Society, Pit Band, served as Class Treasurer and won a Clarkson Leadership Award. Ely is majoring in architectu­re at Cornell University.

Alex Newman played four years on the football team and was a team captain. He won an RPI Medal for Math & Science and is a member of Pit Band and Spanish Club. Newman will study biology and Spanish at the University of Pennsylvan­ia. RONDOUT VALLEY Skylar Kortright is the class valedictor­ian and participat­ed four years on the Ganders spring track, three on girls soccer and one on the cross country team. She is a member of Band, Empty Bowls proj- ect and was team captain for soccer and track. Kortright is going to study geology at either Hartwick, St. Michael’s, Siena or Wells College.

Henry Hauser, who ranks eighth in his class, played two years on the Ganders boys lacrosse and soccer teams. He is a member of National Honor Society, Band and was a Math tutor. Hauser is going to study informatio­n science at Cornell University.

ROOSEVELT Samantha Emmert ranks sixth in her class and was a four-year member of the Presidents softball and girls soccer team, while playing three years on the basketball team. She is a member of National Honor Society, Prom Committee, was team captain for all three sports and an Elementary School tutor. Emmert is going to major in biology.

Jared Schiffer ranks 14th in his class and was a six-year member of the Presidents boys swimming team, four on cross country, and one year each on boys lacrosse and track. He is a member of National Honor Society, Marching Band, was co-captain of swimming team and was a National Engineers Week volunteer. He plans to major in physical therapy at Ithaca College.

SAUGERTIES Maureen Ball ranks third in her class and played three years for the Sawyers softball and volleyball teams, as well as one on basketball. She is a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, and was team captain for volleyball and softball. Ball is attending Harvard University and plans to study linguistic­s and internatio­nal relations.

Jesse Sparling ranks 10th in his class and was a one-year member of the Sawyers cross country team. He is a member of National Honor Society, Key Club and volunteere­d at the Garlic Festival. He is studying aerospace engineerin­g at Embry-Riddle Aeronautic­al University.

SPACKENKIL­L Martha Engle, ranked fourth in her class, played five years for the Spartans girls tennis team. She is a member of National Honor Society, French Club, won a National Merit Commendati­on and was treasurer for student government and Senior Class. Engle is majoring in biology-pre-med at Binghamton University.

Shawn Kollesar ranks fifth in his class and was a four-year player on the Spartans boys tennis team and two years on soccer. He is a member of National Honor Society, Mock Trial, was a Math tutor and won a National Merit Commendati­on. Kollesar is studying computer science at the University of Illinois.

WALLKILL Jennifer Rutkowski, ranks 20th in her class, and spent three years on the Panthers nordic ski and girls tennis teams. She is a member of National Honor Society, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and All State Ensemble. Rutkowski is going to Marist College to study biomedical sciences.

Kevin Presutti, who ranked ninth in his class, was a three-year player on the Panthers football and boys basketball teams. He is a member of National Honor Society, National Young Leaders Conference and served as a youth football coach. Presutti is majoring in communicat­ions/sports broadcasti­ng at SUNY Oneonta.

WEBUTUCK Claire Markonic, who ranked third in her class, participat­ed four years on the Warriors track team and three on field hockey. She is a member of National Honor Society, Prom Committee, Band, was team captain for field hockey and a Bike NY volunteer. Markonic is attending Bates College and is undecided on a major.

Jesse Capellaro ranks 11th in his class and spent three years on the Warriors track and cross country teams. He is a member of Orchestra, Marathon Project and a volunteer for Northeast Historic Society. Capellaro is attending Ithaca College to study physical therapy.
