Scholarship to attend Camp DeBruce available
WHAT: Catskill Center’s Camp DeBruce Scholarship available WHEN: Applications due Feb. 20 WHERE: Camp DeBruce in Livingston Manor DETAILS: The Catskill Center is accepting applications for the 2015Camp DeBruce Scholarship Program. The center will sponsor one student to attend a week during the 2015summer at Camp DeBruce. Eligible students must be between the ages of 11and 13and live in the Catskill Park (blue line) of the Catskill Mountain Region. The scholarship will cover the costs (food, lodging and camp activities) for one youngsters to attend the camp for one week, from Sunday to Saturday. The recipient of the scholarship will be selected by a committee of the Catskill Center’s Board of Directors, based on their application and one-page essay. Benefit for Darmstadt Shelter on Feb. 22
WHAT: Benefit for Family of Woodstock’s Darmstadt Shelter WHEN: Feb. 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. WHERE: Patel’s Kingston Lanes — Recreation Center, 644E. Chester Street Bypass, Kingston DETAILS: The Ulster Leadership Development Institute, is sponsored by Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The institute’s Class of 2015is holding a benefit for Family of Woodstock’s Darmstadt Shelter. The shleter is in need of $20,000to build a new children’s play area. Tickets are $20, which includes two hours of bowling and shoes. Tickets are taxdeductible. Make checks payable to Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Maple tapping, tubing workshop takes place Feb. 14
WHAT: Maple tapping and tubing workshop WHEN: Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. WHERE: Call for directions. DETAILS: The Catskill Mountains are abundant in maple trees, especially the sugar maple. Maple syrup can be made easier by using modern-day tapping and tubing systems. The Catskill Forest Association will demonstrate the basic techniques of tapping maple trees and gathering sap using tubing at a nearby sugar bush. Call for directions. Admission is free to association members, $10for non-association members. Preregistration is required. Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center celebrates 10 years
WHAT: Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center’s 10th anniversary celebration WHEN: March 7 from 6 to 11 p.m. WHERE: The Grandview, 176 Rinaldi Blvd., Poughkeepsie DETAILS: Join the Annual Spring Gala. It will be an evening of cocktails, fine dining, auctions, dancing and celebration while providing support for LGBTQ people and families at the same time. All proceeds support the center’s programs and services providing education, advocacy and support for LGBTQ people and families across the Hudson Valley and beyond. You can also become a Gala Angel or give an Angel listing as a gift. All Angel listings include the chance to win one of four Greater New England getaways. Bardavon broadcasts opea double bill on Feb. 14
WHAT: Bardavon presents MET LIVE in HD: Tchaikovsky-Bartok double bill WHEN: Feb. 14, with pre-show talk at noon and show at 12:30 p.m. WHERE: Bardavon Opera House, 35Market St., Poughkeepsie DETAILS: This opera double bill features an enchanting fairy tale and an erotic psychological thriller. The Bardavon will continue The Met: Live in HD 201415Season with a live broadcast of Tchaikovsky’s “Iolanta” and Bartok’s “Bluebeard’s Castle.” On the heels of her triumphant Met performances in “Eugene Onegin,” soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill. Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in “Iolanta,” while Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. “Iolanta” also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas. Thirty minutes before curtain time, ticket-holders are invited to enjoy an insightful talk by Leslie Gerber, who is a music teacher at Marist’s Center for Lifetime Studies and the author of all Hudson Valley Philharmonic playbill liner notes. Tickets for “Iolanda” and “Bluebeard’s Castle” are $26for adults, $24for Bardavon members and $19 for children 12 and under.
