Artist will give lecture at Woodstock church New Paltz church will hear from guest pastor
The Rev. Peg Van Siclen will be the guest pastor on Sunday, Aug. 28, at the 8:30 and 10:45 services a.m. at New Paltz United Methodist Church, 1 Grove St.
She will be the 16th guest to help the church celebrate 230 years of Methodism in New Paltz.
A third-generation member of the church, she was baptized by the Rev. Will Porter and began Sunday School at age 3. She was confirmed in New Paltz by the Rev. Robert Meyer. She participated in the youth ministry at Grace United Methodist Church and Mountainville United Methodist Church.
After Van Siclen became a pastor, her first appointment was serving the joint parish of Callicoon/ Narrowsburg. During her time there, she attained her masters of divinity degree from Drew Theological School. Her last parish was a cooperative of five churches. Van Siclen served the congregations of Roxbury and Halcott until she, with the bishop’s blessing, left to care for her failing parents.

Awardwinning artist Julia Santos Solomon will present a lecture about her work titled “Divine Revelation in the Art Process” on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 2:p.m. in the sanctuary of Christ’s Lutheran Church, 26 Mill Hill Road.
Santos Solomon will discuss the role spirituality plays for her as an artist. She is one of the most successful contemporary Dominican artists on the landscape today. Her work is represented in museums and public collections both nationally and abroad and has been featured in art publications such as New Art International, Acrylic Revolution and Acrylic Illuminations.
She was recently the subject of a panel at the Latin Art Conference at the University of Illinois titled “Dominican York Women Artists at the Intersection of Contemporary Art,” for which she received an award that will be archived at the Smithsonian American Art Archives. Her work spans from painting to mixed media and sculpture.
Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in the United States, Santos Solomon attended the High School of Art and Design in New York before receiving a full scholarship to the Rhode Island School of Design. While still at the school, she also attended Brown University. After college, she became a founding member of The Altos de Chavon School of Design, a Parsons School affiliate, in the Dominican Republic. She later moved back to the United States and taught at Parsons School of Design in Manhattan for 18 years. In 1996, she moved to Woodstock, where she currently resides. She is a member of Christ’s Lutheran Church.
