Bulkeley Middle School students Jonah Carleton, Grace R. Ellis, Jillian Holen, Talulah E. Patch and Adeline Tumolo were the recipients of the Outstandin­g Academic Achievemen­t Award.

The award is given to students who have been on the high honor roll for three years in middle school. Students earn high honor roll status by achieving a grade average of 90 or above.

Also receiving awards were Bulkeley students Elaine Albahary, Jacob Bancroft, Claire Finnegan, Helen K. Fleming, Andrew Gausepohl, Kathleen Hall, Bethany Hutchings, Jacob Long, Colin Murray, Zachary Neuneker, Alexandria Szabo and William Szabo. They were honored for being on the honor roll for three years in

middle school.

Students earn honor roll status by achieving a grade average of 80 or higher.

Burtchaell of Wallkill was awarded a 2015-16 Firemen’s Associatio­n of the State of New York Gerard J. Buckenmeye­r Volunteer Scholarshi­p.

Burtchaell received a certificat­e and a $1,500 scholarshi­p for his volunteer service to the community during a ceremony at Wallkill High School on June 10.

Burtchaell graduated from Wallkill High in June and will attend Dutchess Community College in Poughkeeps­ie in the fall. He will major in fire science. He plans on becoming a future fire instructor or a fire battalion chief in New York City of Maryland.

Burtchaell is a member of the Cronomer Valley Fire Department, Newburgh Battalion

3, Station No. 9. He has since recruited his mother for the Fire Police.

He was one of 15 students chosen for the scholarshi­p out of a total of 115 applicants.

The scholarshi­ps were

awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as a fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention and other projects, 4-H or some other activity.

Additional criteria are the demonstrat­ion of good character and a written essay.
