Services scheduled for sheriff's sergeant

Funeral services have been scheduled for Ulster County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Kerry J. Winters Sr.

SAUGERTIES >> Funeral services for Kerry J. Winters Sr., a 51-year-old sergeant with the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office’s Correction­s Division who died after participat­ing in a dive team training exercise on Sept. 22, will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Glasco.

Winters, who had been with the Sheriff’s Office for 30 years, was a 1983 graduate of Saugerties High School, where he had been a standout wrestler and football player. A Saugerties resident, he was married to the former Michele “Mitchy” Ferraro and had two sons.

He died at HealthAlli­ance Hospital’s Broadway Campus in Kingston Thursday after being found unconsciou­s during an in-water dive training exercise at the Ashokan Reservoir in the town of Olive.

An experience­d and accomplish­ed diver, he was wearing full dive gear and a back-up air supply at the time, according to Ulster County Sheriff Paul VanBlarcum. An investigat­ion into his death is continuing.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Buono Funeral Service, 100 Main St., Saugerties. Emergency responders and friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Lazy Swan Village, 1754 Old Kings Highway, Saugerties.

Burial will follow the funeral services Thursday at St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery, Barclay Heights.
