Betty Jane Towle Ohno, 91, of Saugerties
Betty Jane Towle Ohno, 91, of Washington Avenue, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, at Ten Broeck Commons Nursing Home.
Born April 10, 1925, in Richford, Vt., she was the daughter of the late William and Ruth Towle.
A Saugerties resident for many years, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Vermont. There she met her husband, Roy (also a Chemistry major), who predeceased her in 1993. She was a charter member and past president of the League of Women Voters, member of the Saugerties Democratic Committee, former member of the Saugerties Water Board, founding member of the 398 Club, and an avid bridge player and reader. She was a parishioner at St. Mary of the Snow. Betty loved all her jobs, which included positions at GE in Pittsfield, Mass., Cantine’s Paper Mill, and Saugerties Post Star and Old Dutch PennySaver.
Survivors include two sons: William (Maria) Ohno of Columbia, Md., and Richard (Cheryl) Ohno of Collierville, Tenn.; two daughters: Sara “Sally” (James) Scannell of Arlington, Mass., and Margaret “Meg” (Robert) Lachmann of Saugerties; and her sister, Susan T. Duncan of Burlington, Vt.
Betty was predeceased by her brother, Dr. William H. Towle.
Betty is also survived by her grandchildren, Jaime Ohno, Lauren (Richard) Gasher; Thomas Ohno, Michael (Katie) Ohno, Caralyn Ohno; Patrick Scannell, Elizabeth Scannell; Matthew Swart, and Daniel Lachmann; great-grandchild, Brooklynn Gasher; and several nieces and nephews.
The family thanks the staff at Ten Broeck Commons, especially in the Brinck Unit, for taking such good care of her.
Her funeral procession will form at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at SeamonWilsey Funeral Home Inc. (corner of John and Lafayette streets), Saugerties, proceeding to St. Mary of the Snow, where at 10 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at SeamonWilsey Funeral Home.
