Rhinebeck chalks up win over Pine Plains

Elise Voorhis and Dani Amidon each scored their first varsity goal as a Rhinebeck High squad thinned by illness rolled past Pine Plains, 9-0, in Mid-Hudson Athletic League soccer action.

Saugerties High moved into the rarified air of 4-0 in Section 9 Football on Friday, stopping Valley Central, 34-27, in a non-league game.

Jack Hindes rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown to lead the Sawyers. Saugerties amassed nearly 500 yards offense, including 350 on the ground.

“I knew this would be a trap game coming off Port Jervis and with Wallkill next,” Sawyers coach Dom Zarrella said. “I thought they were a well-coached team with a good passing game. We ran hard and made some plays in the passing game. We still have work to do.”

The Sawyers led 34-20 late in the game. After the (0-4) Vikings scored their last touchdown, Saugerties got a couple of first downs and ran out the clock.

Keith Hartrum and Matt Bucci each scored two TDs for the Sawyers. Bucci threw for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for one. He had a 32-yard TD pass to Zach Hartrum and a 56-yard strike to Keith Hartrum.

Keith Hartrum also scored on a run.

Anthony Owen had a pair of sacks and Nick Dennis made five tackles to key the Saugerties defense.

The Sawyers are back in action Friday night at Wallkill. Rondout 47, Ellenville 6

At Ellenville, quarterbac­k Ben Hikade ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns and Kyle Van Laer raced for 62 yards and two more scores as Rondout Valley defeated the Blue Devils in the annual Valley Jug Game.

Rondout improved to 2-2 on the year.

Anthony DiMarco also had a big night, rushing for 143 yards and a pair of TDs to lead (0-4) Ellenville.

Zach Bonite ran for two touchdowns and also completed all four of his pass attempts for 78 yards for the Blue Devils. Anthony Walton also had a big day on the ground with 62 yards and a TD.

A 22-point second quarter had Rondout up, 34-20, at halftime. Wallkill 12, Poughkeeps­ie 6

At Poughkeeps­ie, A.J. Dembroski threw a pair of touchdown passes to Justin Dunikowski and the Wallkill defense stepped up to shut down the Pioneers to snare the Class A victory.

Wallkill (1-1, 2-2) stopped Poughkeeps­ie and its nohuddle offense twice inside the Panther 10-yardline during the first half.

Dembroski snapped the scoreless battle with a 19yard strike to Dunikowski with 2:46 left in the half and found him again for an 8-yard TD midway through the third quarter for a 12-0 lead.

Trevon Reid scored on a 1-yard quarterbac­k sneak late in the third for (12, 1-3) Poughkeeps­ie. The Pioneers drove again in the fourth, but Wallkill stopped them on its own 8 with 8:59 remaining. Spackenkil­l 52, Pine Plains 12

At Pine Plains, Camron Abalos ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 184 yards and two more TDs to lead (10, 3-1) Spackenkil­l over (03, 0-4) Pine Plains/Rhinebeck in a Class B, Division II game.

Kabongo Barry also provided a spark for the Spartans with an 80-yard kickoff return for a score plus a 55-yard intercepti­on return.

Pat Mitchell ran for 102 yards and a TD to lead Pine Plains. Lakeland 3, Highland 0

At Highland, Michael Ferretti’s field goal was the difference in a defensive non-league duel between (2-2) Lakeland and the (2-2) Huskies.

Mike Malheiro was a workhorse for Highland, carrying the ball 24 times for 69 yards.
