14U Phillies reach final of Montgomery tourney

The Kingston American Legion Post 150 Ulster Fillies 14-andunder squad fell in the final of the recent Montgomery Madness Softball Tournament. The Fillies lost, 9-5, to the Dutchess Debs in the title game.

MONTGOMERY >> The Kingston American Legion Post 150 Ulster Fillies 14-andunder squad fell in the final of the recent Montgomery Madness Softball Tournament. The Fillies, who finished 3-2-1 in the tournament, lost 9-5 to the Dutchess Debs in the title game. Christie Collins took the loss for Ulster, which outhit the Debs 10-7. Ulster trailed 2-1 after two innings before a 4-run rally gave it a brief lead.

Collins (sacrifice fly), Ella Cappillino (double), Kristian Wilson (single) and Sydney Shuta (single) drove in runs in the third before Dutchess took the lead for good in the fourth. Ulster advanced to the final with a 6-5 win over the top-seeded Monroe Cruisers. Paige Bell recorded the win, striking out four, in the completega­me effort. Ulster broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth, scoring three runs on hits from Shuta, Bell and Ava Guralnick to take the lead for good.

Guralnick, Collins and Abby Lee drove in runs in the fifth as the Fillies scored three times to overcome a 1-0 deficit. Monroe responded with two runs in its half of the inning to forge a 3-3 tie.

The Fillies earned a berth in the semis with a 6-1 win over the Debs Storm to open eliminatio­n play.
