Kingston notches rare win against Monroe-Woodbury
Kingston High’s girls tennis team extended its win streak to five straight Friday with its first triumph over Monroe-Woodbury in eight years.
The Tigers won, 4-3. A transportation issue led to the team arriving more than an hour late, so the schools agreed on playing an eight-game pro set for each match.
Lila Shih Freeman, Vyda Van-Denberg and Raquelle DeCicco won 8-2, 8-3 and 8-4, respectively, to give Kingston the edge in doubles. The second doubles team of Katherine Kuster and Kyla Rowen clinched the win with an 8-5 decision over Sydnie Charleston and Katie Murrey.
Kingston is now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Division I. The Tigers are tied for first place with Newburgh Free Academy, whom they host on Wednesday.
“This is the latest in the season in my 18 years as a head coach that we’ve been in first place,” Kingston coach Bill Constant said.
The winner of Wednesday’s match wins the division.
The Tigers have two matches before that happens. They host Warwick on Monday and head Tuesday to Valley Central, a program a Constant-coached team has never beaten.
