Learn to swing in Gardiner

WHAT: A six-week series of Swing Dance Lessons.

WHEN: Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The classes begin Oct. 1 and continue Oct. 8, 15, 22, 29 and Nov. 5. Pre-registrati­on, with a $20 deposit, is required by Sept. 29.

WHERE: Gardiner Library community room, 133 Farmer’s Turnpike, Gardiner.

DETAILS: The Gardiner Library will be offering a sixweek series of Swing Dance Lessons. The class will focus on the fundamenta­ls of swing dancing, primarily the six-count steps which encompass the East Coast swing dance style. This is a partner dance with a leadfollow relationsh­ip, however no partner is necessary to take the class. Pairs will rotate during the lesson in order to practice and learn from one another. Instructor Haley Kwak is a dance teacher at Got Rhythm? Dance Studio in Gardiner. She teaches the SUNY New Paltz Swing Dance Club and taught beginner classes and workshops in Albany’s swing dance community. The cost is $120 for one person or $200 for two.

Maritime Museum offers foliage cruise on schooner replica

WHAT: Hudson river maritime museum to host foliage sail aboard the schooner Mystic Whaler

WHEN: Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 5 to 7 p.m.

WHERE: The sail will depart from and return to the Hudson River Maritime Museum docks, 50 Rondout Landing, Kingston.

DETAILS: The Hudson River Maritime Museum will offer a two-hour sunset foliage cruise aboard the tall ship Mystic Whaler, an 83-foot reproducti­on of a late-19th century coastal cargo schooner. The event is part of the museum’s “Visiting Vessels” program. Snacks and hors d’oeuvres featuring local produce along with cider from the Hudson Valley will be served. Tickets are $40 for members and $45 for non-members. Children must be age 5 or older and accompanie­d by an adult in order to go on this sail. Preceding the Tuesday sail, the Mystic Whaler will be open to the public for free deck tours on Monday, Oct. 3 from 1 to 4 p.m.

‘Mad Forest’ takes stage at SUNY New Paltz

WHAT: A staging of Caryl Churchill’s “Mad Forest,” an account of the Romanian Revolution told through a dramatic fusion of reality and the occult.

WHEN: Sept. 29, Sept. 30, Oct. 1, Oct. 13, Oct. 14 and Oct. 15 at 8 p.m., and on Oct. 2 and Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.

WHERE: Parker Theatre, SUNY New Paltz, 1 Hawk Drive, New Paltz.

DEAILS: The Department of Theatre Arts at SUNY New Paltz presents a staging of Caryl Churchill’s “Mad Forest.” The production is directed by Assistant Professor Catherine Doherty and performed by an ensemble cast of 14 New Paltz student actors. “Mad Forest” moves cinematica­lly between scenes set before, during and after the Romanian Revolution of 1989, an extended period of violent unrest that brought about the eventual end of 42 years of Communist rule in Romania. Churchill’s tale is told from multiple perspectiv­es: citizens young and old, wealthy and working-class, Romanian and Hungarian, animal, spiritual, and even soulless are given space to voice their thoughts, fears and conditions. Tickets are $18; $16 for senior ages 62 and older and New Paltz faculty and staff and nonNew Paltz students; and $10 for SUNY New Paltz students.

DETAILS: The Bardavon’s Matinees & Music senior citizens program kicks off with The Corvettes: 1950’s Doo-Wop Revue. Matinees & Music is made possible in part through the support of the Ann and Abe Effron Donor Advised Fund of the Community Foundation­s of the Hudson Valley; a City of Poughkeeps­ie Community Developmen­t Block Grant; and the Dutchess County Office of the Aging. The Corvettes: 1950’s Doo Wop Revue is dedicated to preserving and performing the music. From New Hampshire to New Orleans and Virginia to Vegas, The Corvettes perform the music of the 1950s Doo Wop era with a fresh new energy. Tickets are $6 by donation.

Olana showcases jewelry artist Amy DiLalla

WHAT: The Olana Museum Store joins artist Amy (Barta) DiLalla of The Peach Tree for an afternoon pop up shop and artist highlight.

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 1 from 12 to 4 p.m.

WHERE: Olana Museum Store, 5720 State Route 9G, Hudson

DETAILS: DiLalla will be at Olana to explain her process, showcase the variety of her work and take special requests. She is a Hudson Valley jewelry artist. Her work has been sold in The Olana Museum Store since 2013. DiLalla draws her inspiratio­n from Olana’s 250 acres of natural life that surrounds the home. She’s also inspired by the way that Church was able to fashion the landscape to compliment his living space. The Olana Museum Store will host DiLalla for a pop-up shop with several of her pieces available.
