New Paltz tops Ellenville

- Freeman staff

Antonio Alvarez scored two goals for New Paltz Monday, including the game-winner with two minutes left in regulation, to lift the Huguenots to a 3-2 nonleague boys soccer win over Ellenville High.

Fernando Cuellar assisted on both of Alvarez’s goals.

Wes Cruz set up Roman Hrynovets with a score, then tallied himself off a Justin Guiliano pass to give (8-7) Ellenville the halftime lead.

Elijah Tamarchenko’s free kick tied it for New Paltz early into the second half.

“Ever see the movie ‘Groundhog’s Day’?” Ellenville coach Maxwell Mead remarked.

“We had chance after chance after chance to go up 3-, 4-, 5-1. Wasted all of them.

We showed a lot of character to respond to going down 0-1 and turned the game around quickly.

However, we did not put them away when should have and they made us pay.

Another late goal on a defensive lapse.”

Both teams used two goalkeepers.

Daniel Drewnowski and Wesley Mize combined for nine saves for New Paltz, while Christian Stinehour and Daniel Mahany combined for three saves for the Blue Devils.
