Flag will honor fallen Viet­nam vet­eran

A United States flag mea­sur­ing 20 by 30 feet will be pre­sented and do­nated to Ul­ster Hose Co. No. 5 in honor of fallen U.S. Marine Cpl. Ch­ester J. Joy, who served dur­ing the Viet­nam War, at 1 p.m. Sun­day, Oct. 23, at 25 Kier­sted Ave., with Joy’s fam­ily and friends, lo­cal veter­ans groups and the com­mu­nity in at­ten­dance.

Joy served with F Com­pany, Sec­ond Bat­tal­ion, in the vicin­ity of the 26th Demil­i­ta­rized Zone. While at­tack­ing hos­tile forces in a push by the Marines in Quang Tri Prov­ince on May 16, 1967, he suf­fered fa­tal gun­shot wounds.

The re­cip­i­ent of sev­eral awards, in­clud­ing the Pur­ple Heart, the Na­tional De­fense Ser­vice Medal, Viet­nam Ser­vice Medal and the Viet­nam Cam­paign Medal, Joy was the sec­ond ca­su­alty from the Kingston area dur­ing the Viet­nam War.
