Flag will honor fallen Vietnam veteran

A United States flag measuring 20 by 30 feet will be presented and donated to Ulster Hose Co. No. 5 in honor of fallen U.S. Marine Cpl. Chester J. Joy, who served during the Vietnam War, at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at 25 Kiersted Ave., with Joy’s family and friends, local veterans groups and the community in attendance.

Joy served with F Company, Second Battalion, in the vicinity of the 26th Demilitari­zed Zone. While attacking hostile forces in a push by the Marines in Quang Tri Province on May 16, 1967, he suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

The recipient of several awards, including the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Joy was the second casualty from the Kingston area during the Vietnam War.
