Charles T. Winters III, 74, of Mill Lane Extension, formerly of Russell Street, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at the Golden Hill Health Nursing and Rehabilita­tion Center, with his family at his side.

Born May 31, 1942, in Saugerties, he was the son of the late Charles T. and Philomena Winters.

A lifetime Saugerties resident, he began a career in law enforcemen­t as a Village of Saugerties police officer in 1968. He served as the president of the Village of Saugerties PBA, as a member of the Ulster County Shields, served on both the town and village of Saugerties Police Advisory Boards and was a former police commission­er for the Village of Saugerties. He retired from the police force in 1991. In 1992, he was elected as a Village Board Trustee for the village of Saugerties, where he served for two terms, retiring in 1996.

He obtained his Real Estate Broker’s License in 1973 and opened the Charles Winters Real Estate Business, which is still in operation, headed up by his son, John Winters. He was a member of the Ulster County MLS and the Board of Realtors. He also was a process server and a commission­ed notary public.

He was a life member of R.A. Snyder Hose Co. No. 1 and a life member of the Saugerties Exempts Firemen’s Associatio­n. Charles had a huge heart and was always ready and willing to help people in need, and has helped a countless number of people in his lifetime.

Charles and Karen deeply loved each other and were married at age 15 and 17. He was a very dedicated family man and loved and enjoyed every moment with his family and he loved his Country and God. Charles is and was one of Saugerties Great Pioneers.

Survivors include his wife, the former Karen Minkler; one daughter, Ann and her husband Neal Smoller; two sons, Charles T. IV and his wife ToniLynne and John J. and his wife Tina Winters; grandchild­ren, Neal and his wife Erin Smoller Jr., Karen and her husband Luis Guillen Martinez, Charles V, Christophe­r and his wife Amanda, Stephanie and John Jr. Winters; his great-grandchild­ren, Rowan, Liv, Ava and Arya Smoller, Peter, Taylor, Michael, Julia, Ryan and Kenzi Winters and Eliza Guillen Martinez; two sisters, Vera Wager and Charlotte Winters; and one brother, Steven Winters.

He was predecease­d by his beloved brother, Michael Winters, and his beloved grandson, Michael Winters. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., corner of John and Lafayette streets, Saugerties. Interment will follow in Blue Mountain Cemetery.
