Army moves closer to bowl eligibility

Bradshaw, Woolfolk lead Black Knights to win over Wake Forest

- By Aaron Beard

Ahmad Bradshaw scored on an 11-yard keeper with 11:45 left to help Army beat Wake Forest 21-13 on Saturday, inching the Black Knights closer to bowl eligibility.

Army (5-3) had fallen behind 10-7 early in the third and trailed until Bradshaw’s keeper around the left side. By that point, Army had gradually taken control of the game, with its defense taking the Demon Deacons (5-3) out of rhythm while its offense finally ran with its wear-you-down, clock-melting style.

In fact, after picking off John Wolford for the third time with 9:25 left, Army took nearly 6½ minutes off the clock with a 12play drive that ended with Darnell Woolfolk’s 6-yard clinching TD run for a 21-10 lead with 2:54 left.

Wake Forest was trying to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2011. But Wolford got the Demon Deacons off to a bad start with two interceptions on overthrown balls on the first three possessions, and Wake Forest’s offense sputtered as Army made its fourth-quarter move.

THE TAKEAWAY

ARMY: The Black Knights have proven they’re the type of team content to lean on opponents with the run — again and again — to

wear them down and slowly assert control. This game was a reminder of how well that formula can work, even on a day when the big rushing totals aren’t there.

WAKE FOREST: Despite its moments of growth in Dave Clawson’s third season, Wake Forest is still

prone to offensive struggles and lacks some big-play punch, occasionally turning drives into work-for-everything fights.
