SUNY New Paltz teams place sixth out of 10

Both the SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s cross country teams placed sixth out of 10 teams in the State University of New York Athletic Conference championsh­ips.

The Hawks women’s squad finished with a slightly better 148-point showing, led by Rebeca Verrone who placed 14th in the 6K with a time of 22:34.1. Emily Cavanagh (15th, 22:35.2), Sherri Metcalfe (45th, 23.52), Vanessa Morgan (49th, 23:57.7) and Brenna O’Brien (50th, 24:02.3) followed for New Paltz.

Geneseo collected 28 points to take home its second straight women’s title and 16th overall. Oneonta finished second with 43 points, while Cortland took third with 113 points.

The men’s team finished with 153 points, led by Gal Vasquez who finished 15th out of 114 runners in the 8K course with a 25:28.3, followed by Stephen Smith (35th, 26.59.4), Jack Wilson (40th 27:12.5), Josh Korn (41st, 27:14.9), Barrett Celecki (43rd, 27:21.9).

Kingston High graduate Ian Detweiler finished 43rd in 27:21.9, while Onteora’s Aidan Klein was 108th with 31:31.8.

Geneseo took its third straight SUNYAC title and 15th overall, while Oneonta finished second with 62, and Fredonia finished third with 94.

The Hawks men’s and women’s teams compete in the NCAAA Division III regional championsh­ips at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey on Nov. 12.
