Joan S. Van Loan, 82, of Broadway, Port Ewen, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, following a battle with cancer.

Joan was born in Middle Village, Long Island, on June 18, 1934, a daughter of the late John and Mary Jane (Herworth) Stowell. She married the love of her life, Donald L. Van Loan, on January 18, 1957, at the Church of the Presentati­on of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Port Ewen. They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in January.

She was employed by Grants Store in uptown Kingston, and also by IBM Kingston and Ferroxcube in Saugerties. Joan was most notably co-owner of Van Loan’s Discount Beverage in Port Ewen, and with her husband Don establishe­d the popular Port Ewen beverage business in 1974.

Joan enjoyed traveling to casinos and to her second home in Florida, where she and her husband Don would enjoy spending warm times with their family and many friends.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Donald Van Loan, and his wife Michelle, of Ulster Park, Donna Brice, and her husband Leonard, of Kingston, Diane Paradies, and her husband Barry, of Port Ewen, Jody Van Loan of Port Ewen, David Van Loan, and his wife Kristin, of Port Ewen; a sister, Jeanne Kinns of Saugerties; grandchild­ren, Jessica Parasella, and her fiance Justin Benjamin, of Kingston, Anne Marie Van Loan, and her companion Justin DeBroskie, of Kingston, Cody Van Loan, and his companion Michael Woodin, Nicole Molinaro, and her husband Eric, of Kingston, and Megan Gillepsie; and greatgrand­children Justin, Audrianna, Wesley, and Delaney. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

The Van Loan family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus.

The funeral procession will form at 10 a.m. on Monday from the funeral home, thence to Church of the Presentati­on of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Port Ewen, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Pastor Carl D. Johnson, celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kingston.
