SUNY Hawks solid in NCAA Division III Regionals

GLASSBORO, N.J >>> Both the SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s cross country teams placed top-20 at the NCAA Division III Regionals at Rowan University.

The women made the best showing finishing 15the out of 43 teams with 370 points. Emily Cavanagh led the Hawks, placing 30th of out 303 runners in the 6k, finishing with a schoolreco­rd time of 21:57.6

Rebecca Verrone (43rd, 22:18.9), Sheri Metcalfe (53rd, 22:32.1), Amanda Engrassia (123rd, 23:27.2), and Brenna O’Brein (124th, 23:28) rounded out the New Paltz scorers.

Genesseo took top honors with 90 points to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championsh­ips. SUNY Oneonta was runner-up with 112 points, also earning a, NCAA bid, with 121 points.

Amy Regan from the Steven’s Institute of Technology was first in 20:05.1

The men finished 20th with 506 points, led by Galo Vasquez, who finished the 8k course 23rd out 303 runners, in a school-record 25:03.3.

Wallkill High graduate Stephen Smith (82nd, 26:07), Josh Korn (103rd, 26:22.2), Kingston product Ian Detweiler (137th, 26:48) and Barrett Celecki (165th, 27:17.4) rounded the Hawks.

Geneseo finished first with 51 points to reach nationals. RPI earned the runner-up spot and a bid to the NCAAs with 87 points. The Knights’ Isaac Garcia-Cassani was first in 24:15.8.
