Saugerties, New Paltz, Red Hook, Wallkill win season openers

Red Hook, New Paltz, Wallkill and Saugerties all won their Section 9 wrestling season-opening matches Wednesday night.

New Paltz and Red Hook defeated the combined Eldred-Livingston Manor-Sullivan West squad. New Paltz won 45-27, while Red Hook was a 57-15 winner.

In other meets, Wallkill edged Valley Central 37-30, Saugerties downed Newburgh Free Academy 45-20, Kingston lost to Cornwall 45-28 and Chester swept Onteora and Rondout Valley. Red Hook & New Paltz win

Pins from Matt Morris (99 pounds), Vaughn Donovan (145), Mike Kenny (170) and Jeffrey Kiluba (182) plus a decision by Ryan Hobson at 195 led the Raiders in the meet at New Paltz.

Shane Gullikson (145), Jack Purcell (170) and Ben Cuppett (182) all posted decisions and Chris Hiesel won by fall at 138 in the Huguenots’ triumph.

Eldred senior 160-pounder Noah Curreri won twice, including a decision over New Paltz’s Pat Melanson for his 100th career victory.
