Support school vouchers
Dear Editor: I was amused to read about the “Not My President” rally at SUNY New Paltz. The photos show that the crowd was made up largely of children, which made me wonder how many children attended without their parents’ knowledge, brought along by a babysitter, etc.
The group that sponsored the rally, Move Forward New York, says on its website that it has “more than 1700 individuals” as members. Since the population of New York state is around 20 million, that’s a tiny group.
I wonder how many professionals within our public education system are members. Everyone is free to have their own political views, but if I were a parent with school-aged children, I would definitely seek confirmation from my school district that these educators are not using their positions to indoctrinate my children. Since Move Forward New York used children at its political rally, it’s not hard for me to imagine these same people taking their views directly to the kids while they’re in school.
President Trump and our new education secretary, Betsy DeVos, are supporters of a school voucher system which could give parents a real choice in the schools their children attend, outside the public school system. I urge everyone with schoolaged children to contact U.S. Rep. John Faso, R-Kinderhook, and express their support for a federal, school voucher program.
