Area gymnasts, swimmers seeking NYSPHSAA titles

Area gymnasts and swimmers vie for state medals this weekend as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association holds their championship meets in both sports.

KINGSTON, N.Y. >> Area gymnasts and swimmers vie for state medals this weekend as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association holds their championship meets in both sports.

The NYSPHSAA swim meet will be held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow on Long Island and the gymnastics championships are at Cold Spring Harbor High.

The swim preliminaries and all the diving was held Friday.

New Paltz has five athletes in the swim meet. Seamus TrzewikQuinn will compete in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-backstroke and Leo Kuyl will do the 100-freestyle.

They plus Chad Catania and Max Weires are also swimming in the 200 medley relay. Trzewik-Quinn, Kuyl and Catania are also in the 200free relay with Brennan McEntee.

Also competing are Rhinebeck’s Elias Econopouly and Rhett Burns and Robert Reining of Roosevelt.

Econopouly will do the breaststroke and butterfly. Reining will also do the fly plus the 200-free. Burns is competing in the 200-free along with the 500-free.

Seven local athletes comprise the Section 9 squad for the gymnastics meet.

Wallkill’s Emma Frisbie, Miah Frisbee and Amanda Snyder will each compete in the all-around.

Kingston’s Jalynn Harrison and Shannon Kelly, Clara Patton and Dannika Bolitho of Roosevelt will each perform on three apparatus.

Harrison will do the balance beam, vault and floor exercise, while Kelly will be on the vault, floor and uneven parallel bars. Patton competes on the beam, bars and floor, while Bolitho does the bars, beam and vault.

The meet begins at 10 a.m. Section 9 will be paired with Section 7 (Lake Champlain area) and will perform on the beam, floor and vault to start. After sitting out a rotation, the squads finish on the bars.
