Benefit Scrabble Tournament on April 9 in Saugerties

WHAT: Scrabble tournament

WHEN: April 9 from 3 to 5 p.m., with reservatio­ns required by April 6

WHERE: New World Home Cooking, 1411 Route 212, Saugerties

DETAILS: The annual “Scrabble Afternoon” tournament offers three competitiv­e Scrabble matches with prizes, a snack buffet and drinks — along with two hours of learning new words. Show up with a friend for a two-person team or the tourney’s organizers will pair you up. The admission fee is $25 and will benefit the Ulster Literacy Foundation, the Kingston-based organizati­on that provides free one-to-one tutoring in basic reading and writing skills, as well as teaching English as a new language. ‘Cinderella! Cinderella!’ at Woodstock Playhouse

WHAT: Play, Cinderella! Cinderella!” WHEN: March 11 and 12 at 2 p.m.

WHERE: Woodstock Playhouse, 103 Mill Hill Road, Woodstock

DETAILS: The New York Conservato­ry for the Arts’ Children’s Theatre will present two performanc­es of “Cinderella! Cinderella!” It’s a comedy with lessons for the whole family. In the play, Cinderela learns she can rely on her Fairy Godmother for only so long — until she needs to stand up for herself. Attendees can have a photo opportunit­y with Alice and her friends after the show. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and children.

Free workshop for job seekers on April 5

WHAT: Workshop for job seekers

WHEN: April 5 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

WHERE: Cross Conference Room at East Fishkill Community Library, 348 Route 376, Hopewell Junction

DETAILS: The library is hosting a free workshop presented by Dutchess One Stop on skills identifica­tion and transferab­le skills. Employers are interested in your skill sets. The question is, are you able to describe your skills clearly? Learn how to identify skills you possess and how best to describe them when applying for a job. Once you have learned what your skills are, learn how to transfer those skills to other jobs and how best to market them to employers on a resume, in a cover letter and in an interview. Reservatio­ns are suggested. The workshop is limited to 20 people.

Spring Garden Day at SUNY Ulster on April 8

WHAT: Spring Garden Day WHEN: April 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

WHERE: SUNY Ulster, 491 Cottekill Road, Stone Ridge

DETAILS: The Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension of Ulster County Master Gardeners will present their annual Spring Garden Day. The keynote speaker will be Marie Iannotti, a longtime gardener, online garden authority, and a former Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension horticultu­re educator and Master Gardener program coordinato­r. She is also a nursery owner, speaker and author. Iannotti will speak on “A Gardener’s Tour of the Hudson Valley.” A whirlwind tour of local gardens in words and pictures, her talk will feature the history and plantings of such beautiful sites as Stonecrop in Putnam County, Wethersfie­ld in Amenia, Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz and many more. Admission to the event is $40 in advance and $45 at the door. A catered lunch is available and must be purchased upon registerin­g, or attendees can bring their own. Preregistr­ation is highly recommende­d.

Student production of ‘Lion King Jr.’ opens March 17

WHAT: Musical, “The Lion King Jr.”

WHEN: March 17 at 7:30 p.m., March 18 at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and March 19 at 2 p.m.

WHERE: Orpheum Performing Arts Center, 6050 Main St., Tannersvil­le

DETAILS: “The Lion King Jr.,” based on the Broadway production and the animated film, will be performed by students at Hunter-Tannersvil­le Middle School/High School. Advanced tickets are $12 for reserved seating, $10 for general seating, and $6 for seniors and children. Tickets at the door are $12 for adults.
