Town to dedicate solar system at senior center
Officials will mark the installation of a solar installation on the Frank D. Greco Senior Citizens Center roof with a promotional tie in for donations to Small World playground for each new system sold.
At a Town Board meeting last week, Superintendent of Parks and Buildings Greg Chorvas said there will be a 3 p.m. March 25 celebration of the senior center solar equipment.
“As an incentive for homeowners, there’s going to be a promotional period ... through May 15,” he said. “Residents that do sign up to have an energy audit and a solar install will have a $2,000 discount on the install and, then, Direct Energy Solar will, for each one, make a monetary donation of $250 to the Community Foundation of Saugerties, which is the entity which is overseeing the fund-raising endeavors for the rebuild of Small World playground.”
The playground is at the town’s Cantine Field recreational area.
The solar installation at the senior center was completed this year and provides the building with enough electricity to eliminate costs for service from Central Hudson.
“It’s the first ... town or village building that has solar panels,” Chorvas said.
“They installed it the second or third week in January,” he said. “Central Hudson gave the approvals, there was another agency that had to do the approvals, and once we got those approvals we flipped the switch. We weren’t going to wait until March 25 because, then, the system was just sitting there.”
Chorvas said officials will be updated on use of the system and the amount of electric produced by the equipment.
“At future board meetings, I’m going to be giving my monthly report (on) how trees that we’ve saved, how much energy we saved, the environmental impacts that have been reduced,” he said.
