Bids for firehouse work come in low
All but one are smaller than amount authorized for removal of asbestos
KINGSTON, N.Y. >> Most of the bids to remove asbestos from the city’s Central Fire Station in Midtown came in well under the $100,000 authorized by lawmakers for the work.
The city received seven bids for the project in the 110-year-old building at 19 E. O’Reilly St. They ranged from $42,000 to $174,000.
The bidders and their prices, from least to most expensive, are: NRC of Syracuse, $42,000; Sullivan Contracting of Sauquoit, $42,000; D&S Abatement Inc. of Totowa, N.J, $44,500; Specialty Trades Contracting of Chester, $53,750; Genesee Environmental LLC of Rochester, $79,472; Classic Environmental Inc. of Latham, $92,925; and Academy Construction Inc. of Totowa, N.J., $174,000.
It will be up to Kingston Mayor Steve Noble to give the go-ahead for the city to enter into a contract with one of the companies.
The Common Council voted unanimously earlier this month
for the city to spend up to $100,000 for the work. City Engineer Ralph Swenson has said the asbestos is largely in pipe insulation in the basement of the firehouse.
Swenson told city lawmakers that authorizing
the borrowing ahead of time would allow for the asbestos to be removed in a timely fashion and not hold up any other repair work or improvements at the firehouse, which dates to 190708.
A 2016 report by Peak Engineering that found steel reinforcements in the firehouse’s concrete floor, where fire trucks are parked, probably
have deteriorated significantly.
Also last year, the city hired the Latham engineering firm C.T. Male Associates to perform an environmental and structural study of the firehouse. That study is ongoing.
C.T. Male is being paid $52,850 for its work, including a structural report expected to be completed by May.
