NEW PALTZ, N.Y. >> Town Supervisor Neil Bettez expects repairs to the town’s Moriello Pool to be done in time for summer swimming, and he said $75,000 of the project’s $125,000 cost is coming from the state.

Bettez said the New York money, from the State and Municipal Facilities Program, was obtained with the help of state Sen. John Bonacic, R-Mount Hope.

“This helps the town because we’re moving forward with the repairs and know that part of the cost is going to be covered,” the supervisor said.

“We’ve put a deposit down on the liner, and we’re just waiting for the weather to warm up a little bit so we can rip the old liner out,” he said. “We’re hoping to be done on time and under budget.”

The town and village of New Paltz expect to share the $50,000 portion of the cost that’s not being covered by the state, and Bettez said some of the work will be done by municipal crews.

“We’re hoping that our buildings and grounds [employees] can do a lot of the work, and we might try to get some help from the village as well and see if their DPW (Department of Public Works) guys can help us out,” Bettez said.

The supervisor said the fees to use the pool are not expected to increase as a result of the work.

Bonacic, in a press release about the project, said the pool has more than 35,000 users per year and provides work for seasonal employees.

“The ... pool benefits the community in many ways by not only providing great recreational opportunities for residents but also job opportunities,” he said.

Bettez said work on the pool — which is at 32 Mulberry St., just off state Route 32 — is scheduled to be completed by the end of May.

“We usually shoot to open around Memorial Day,” he said.
