‘Catskill 360’ opens Saturday at Arkville gallery
“Catskill 360,” a show of immersive photographs by Alan Powell opens Saturday, April 1, at the Catskill Center’s Erpf Gallery, 43355 Route 28, Arkville.
A reception with the artist will take place April 1 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Powell’s photographs capture unique scenes from across the region using a special technique that stitches together multiple images into an immersive 360 degree view. He has worked in electronic arts and media for more than three decades, starting with single-channel video, installations, artist books and other two-dimensional electronic art. A Rhode Island School of Design graduate, Powell has been involved in artist collectives Electron Movers and Termite TV, integrating digital photography and new media, blending video and photographic practice.
“My visual experience goes beyond a single image,” Powell said in a release on the gallery’s website. “I scan, pan and sample my environment using the electronic tools related to video, sound, photography and three-dimensional imaging. I rarely create an image based on one object/ one moment in time, but arrange images and sounds in a montage or collage.”
Powell captures images with a variety of techniques and technologies. He then constructs the images to knit the environment into a holistic map or to highlight the conceptual relationships between objects, places and people.
Powell’s work features images created from sites across the region, including the Catskill Center’s Platte Clove Preserve. Recent work has included images captured from around the world, including such famous sites as Walden Pond, Mount Greylock (Berkshires) and more isolated locations like Beqa Island, Fiji.
The exhibition will be on display through May 20. The gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
