Máirtín O’Connor Trio performs Saturday

Irish accordion great Máirtín O’Connor brings his trio for a rare US tour and vibrant evening of traditiona­l music on Saturday, April 8, at 8 p.m. at St. Paul’s Church, 7412 South Broadway, Red Hook.

O’Connor will be joined by Cathal Hayden and Patrick Doocey.

The trio have toured the US rarely, though they tour widely in Ireland, Great Britain, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. They have two CDs, including “Crossroads” in 2009 and “Going Places” in 2012.

The trio’s last visit to the area was in 2014, captivatin­g the audience at The Egg in Albany as part of Martin Hayes’ Irish “Masters of Tradition.”

O’Connor was named Ireland’s Traditiona­l Musician of the Year in 1995 and 2015. Playing the accordion since age 9, he was a musical force in Riverdance and played with such greats as The Chieftains, Rod Stewart, Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits and Elvis Costello.

Hayden is an All-Ireland champion on fiddle and banjo. With his bright style mixing American roots with Irish, he has a connection to the Hudson Valley, having recorded at Levon Helm’s studio with

members of The Band, touring the United Kingdom with The Band’s Rick Danko and recording for Woodstock Records.

A guitarist, Doocey is a rising young star on the Irish music scene. Born in Worcester, Mass., and raised in County Mayo, he is an All-Ireland multiinstr­umentalist who has toured with such Irish stars as Lúnasa and Sharon Shannon.
