McMurtry performs Saturday night
Rock singer-songwriter James McMurtry performs Saturday, April 8, at Helsinki Hudson, 405 Columbia St., Hudson.
Ray Mason is the opening act. The show starts at 9 p.m.
McMurtry writes literate, politically charged songs with country, folk, Americana and Texas influences. The son of famed novelist Larry McMurtry, James has a strong cult following, devoted to his smart lyrics, laconic vocals and deft guitar playing.
Last year, McMurtry released “Complicated Game,” his first album in six years. Texas Music Magazine called it “a collection of narratives as sharply observed as any from McMurtry, but with a contemplative depth that comes with maturity.”
McMurtry’s performance will come just days after he wrapped up an East Coast tour. He had previously been touring abroad.
Fans hoping for more sociopolitical commentary from the singular songwriter got a taste with his recent single “Remembrance.”
“It’s election time, but I couldn’t get my head around modern politics,”
McMurtry said in a press release of the song. “Perhaps history holds a lesson or two.” Meanwhile, the longtime Austin resident continues riding waves of universal acclaim for “Complicated Game.”
Mason is based in Pleasant Valley. He has been on his own never-ending tour since 1982. Accompanying himself on his roadworn 1965 Silvertone guitar, he writes classic-style catchy garage-rock tunes with a laid-back vibe that has garnered him shared stages with the likes of NRBQ, The Band, Fountains of Wayne, the Flatlanders, Laura Cantrell, Amy Rigby, Marshall Crenshaw, Bill Morrissey, Graham Parker and Robbie Fulks, among others. Tickets are $25. Call (518) 828-4800 or visit helsinkihudson.com for more information.
