Kingston captures walk-off win over FDR
Kelder tosses three-hitter, while Genther drives in game’s only run in 7th inning
>> Tyler Kelder tossed a three-hit shutout and Kingston High got its first baseball win of the season Tuesday, getting a 1-0 walk-off victory in a non-league game with Roosevelt at Gruner Field.
Kingston pulled out the win with a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Jeff Hayner and Garrett Warnecke drew consecutive walks to start the rally. Sam Tremper followed with a single to load the bases. Tremper had two hits in the game for the Tigers.
A strike away from going to extra innings, Fritz Genther lined a 1-2 single that the third baseman dove for, but couldn’t hold on to. Hayner scored the game-winner without a throw.
Kelder went the distance for the victory, striking out five and walking just one.
Roosevelt threatened in the third when the Presidents filled the bases on a single and two fielding errors by third baseman Avery Short. The senior made amends when he snared Mitchell Oakley’s line drive and stepped on the bag for an inning-ending double play.
“It was nice to get our first win of the year,” Kingston
coach Mike Groppuso said, “but we need to make the proper adjustments mentally or we will find ourselves in similar situations moving forward.
We continued to miss some signs and not execute when needed that prevented us from scoring earlier in the game.”
The Tigers, now 1-1, have a 1 p.m. non-league game Thursday at North Rockland.
