Doris V. Prehn, formerly of Rifton, N.Y., later residing in the Ivy Lodge, Saugerties, died on April 10, 2017, at the Health Alliance Hospital, Broadway Campus, in Kingston.

Doris was born in Union City, N.J., on July 23, 1920. She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Wiesler. At the age of 5, she moved to Binnewater, N.Y., where she grew up.

After graduating from K.H.S. magna cum laude, she then was a member of the last graduating class of the New Paltz Normal School, which later became the University. Her first teaching job held 8 grades in a oneroom school house in Ulster Park.

When World War II broke out, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE, working with meteorolog­y and administra­tive services in Washington, D.C.

When the war ended she met Walter Prehn while ice skating on Williams Lake. They married and had five children. After the children all entered school, she went back to teaching for the Kingston School District. Living on Sturgeon Pool, she would swim most every day in the summer and also held a love for outdoor activities such as skiing, ice skating, and gardening.

After retirement, she was a volunteer tutor for 20 years with RSVP and sang with the community singers.

Doris is survived by her children, Mary and husband John Scacchia of Bedford, N.Y., Kathleen and husband Ronald Valle of West Hurley, James Prehn and wife Irene of Binnewater, and John Prehn and wife Christine of Lake Katrine. She is also survived by a brother, Frank Wiesler of Jupiter Farms, Fla.; six grandchild­ren, Matt Koch, Eric Koch, Stephanie Fuoco, Dr. Sarah Prehn, Caitie and John Prehn; and four greatgrand­children, Naomi, Gianna, Ethan and Daniel Koch.

Doris was predecease­d by husband, Walter; a son, David; and her brother, Wilbur Wiesler.

Her funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at George J. Moylan Funeral Home Inc., 2053 Route 32, Rosendale. The Rev. Edmund Burke will officiate. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Stone Ridge. Friends may call at the funeral home in Rosendale on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
