Book sale in Spring Valley on April 28-30

WHAT: Spring Book Sale WHEN: April 28from 6to 9 p.m., April 29from 8:30a.m. to 7p.m. and April 30from 9a.m. to 2p.m.

WHERE: Pleasant Valley Town Hall, 1554Main St. (U.S. Route 44), Pleasant Valley

DETAILS: The Friends of the Pleasant Valley Library have scheduled their Spring Book Sale. Donations of books, CDs and DVDs in good condition are being accepted now at the library. More than 20,000items will be available for purchase at the Town Hall. Anyone who brings a non‑perishable food item for the local food pantry will receive a free book. The event will begin with a preview sale on April 28, for which there is a $5admission fee. Admission is free April 29 and 30. Children’s books and pocket‑sized paperbacks will start at five for $1and adult books, CDs & DVDS will be five for $5. There will be a giant $5 bag sale on April 30from 9a.m. to 2p.m. Books will be free, although donations will be ac‑ cepted, after 2p.m. on April 30.

Library plans Whitney Museum bus trip

WHAT: Bus trip to The Whit‑ ney Museum

WHEN/WHERE: May 15, with bus departing from the Starr Library, 68W. Market St., Rhinebeck, at 8a.m. and returning at approximat­ely 6 p.m.

DETAILS: The library is offer‑ ing a bus tour to The Whitney Museum in Manhattan for its Whitney Biennial. The event is a biennial exhibition of contempora­ry American art, typically by young and lesser‑known artists. The show is generally regarded as one of the leading shows in the art world, often setting or leading trends in contempora­ry art. It helped bring artists like Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock and Jeff Koons to prominence. The cost is $70and includes round‑trip bus service, the en‑ trance fee and a private group exhibit tour. Payment required to reserve space. In case of a cancellati­on, a refund is given if the seat is filled. The registra‑ tion deadline is April 26.

Economist will give lecture at Vassar on April 20

WHAT: Lecture WHEN: April 20at 5p.m.

DETAILS: The 2017Martin H. Crego Lecture in Economics will be delivered by University of Michigan economist Betsey Stevenson. Her lecture, “Our Changing Lives, Work, Family and Policy in a Time of Gender Equality,” will draw from her research as a labor econo‑ mist with a focus on women and families. Stevenson has published widely in leading economics journals about the effect of public policies on the labor market, with a focus on women and families, and on the value of subjec‑ tive well‑being data for policy analysis. Stevenson also served as a member of the Council of Economic Advisors from 2013 to 2015. The event is free and open to the public.

Program on renewable energy projects in Woodstock

WHEN: Program on renew‑ able energy projects

DETAILS: Woodstock Land Conservanc­y and Woodstock Transition will host Com‑ munity Choice Aggregatio­n, an educationa­l evening about opportunit­ies for local renew‑ able power projects. The event is part of the Fifth An‑ nual Winter Series, talks and films focused on local sus‑ tainabilit­y. Rosendale‑based Citizens for Local Power will present plans to create New York’s most ambitious Com‑ munity Choice Aggregatio­n project in Ulster County to help reduce carbon emis‑ sions, plan and develop local renewable projects, save money and keep energy dol‑ lars in Ulster County. Speak‑ ers from Citizens for Local Power will speak about New York state’s changing energy system, how Community Choice Aggregatio­n works, the community benefits and the Ulster County program. Questions and ideas will be welcome. Parking is available in the Mountain View Studio parking lot and in the public lot off of Rock City Road. Admission is free. Note that shoes are not allowed inside Mountain View Studio. Slip‑ pers are welcome. Refresh‑ ments will be served.

Writing workshop starts May 4 in Athens

WHAT: Writing workshop

WHEN: Thursdays on May 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

WHERE: Athens Cultural Center, 24 Second St., Ath‑ ens

DETAILS: Writer and visual artist Jeanne Heiberg will lead “Curtain Rising on Writing”, a writing work‑ shop inspired by some approaches actors use for their arts of theater, film and television. Writers and actors both develop charac‑ ters, dialogues and scenes — and many of the same preparatio­ns can be utilized in advancing one’s writ‑ ing. Heiberg has developed writing techniques using dialogue, visualizat­ion and imagery to launch writing students into authentic ex‑ pression, and to help them become good observers of both their inner and outer worlds — both important for both actors and writers. The workshop is free.
