Second person dies from house fire
HURLEY, N.Y. >> Another man died from injuries as a result of an early Sunday house fire on Ridgewood Avenue that also killed his son and injured his daughter, police said Monday.
Earlier in the day, The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office identified the first victim as Richard J. Mondello, 62, of Fostoria, Ohio, who was found dead in the living area of the basement of the home where officials believe the blaze began, according to a press release.
His father, Carl J. Mondello, Jr., 89, who had been rescued by firefighters and taken to HealthAlliance Hospital Broadway Campus, later died from his injuries, police said Monday.
At about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, fire, police and emergency medical personnel responded to a call at 212 Ridgewood Ave. for a structure fire with entrapment. Several fire companies responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze, which took about 20 minutes to bring under control, according to the sheriff’s office.
Marianne Agnello, 60, who lived in the house with her father, Carl J. Mondello, Jr., escaped with assistance from her father, police said.
Carl J. Mondello was rescued by firefighters and taken to HealthAlliance Hospital Broadway Campus. He later died from his injuries, police said Monday.
Agnello was taken to Northern Dutchess Hospital for evaluation. Her conditions was unavailable Monday.
Although the investigation is ongoing, the fire is not considered suspicious, according to the sheriff’s office.
There were no animals in the house at the time and no first responders were injured.
On Sunday, Fire Chief Steven Helsley said Agnello, who was hurt, was able to get out of the home and call 911.
When firefighters arrived, he added, there was fire coming from the basement of the split-level ranch home, he said. His father was on the home’s first floor when he was rescued.
Helsey said firefighters controlled the blaze in about 15 minutes, but remained on the scene until 10 a.m.
