MURRELLS INLET, S.C. >> David M. Griffin, Sr., 73, passed away on April 22, 2017 at his home in Murrells Inlet, S.C., with the love of his life, Carolyn, by his side. Born in Utica, N.Y., on Nov. 18, 1943, to John and Mary Griffin, Dave is survived by Carolyn, his wife of 52 years; children, David Jr. of Albany, N.Y., and daughter Kelly (Pat) of Albany, N.Y.; granddaugh­ters, Alexandra and Erin of Albany, N.Y.; brother, Michael (Alison) of Alexandria, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Dave is predecease­d by his brother Paul of Utica, N.Y.

Dave graduated from Notre Dame High School in Utica, N.Y., and received degrees from Mohawk Valley Community College, SUNY Oswego, and Syracuse University. Dave lived in New York’s Hudson Valley region for over 20 years. After retiring from IBM in the 1990’s he remained there, working in the Onteora School District, after which he trained and worked as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor. As an adjunct to that he received a Certificat­e of Spiritual Direction from the Haden Institute of Asheville, N.C. and Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. In addition, while in the Hudson Valley he spent time honing his fly fishing technique and volunteeri­ng at the Family of Woodstock non-profit organizati­on. Dave also maintained a prodigious writing career, publishing works on his websites The Windswept Press and More Stories, and in multiple volumes of short stories.

Residing in Murrells Inlet since 2011, Dave volunteere­d at the Murrells Inlet Fire House, Mobile Meals of The Grand Strand and Street Reach Ministries. Dave was grateful to be a Friend of Bill’s for over 26 years. Dave will be greatly missed by his family and those lucky enough to call him a friend.

Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2017, at the Burroughs Funeral Home at 3558 Old Kings Highway, Murrells Inlet, S.C. During the wake at 7 p.m., friends, family, and Friends of Bill are invited to celebrate Dave’s life by sharing their memories of him. A funeral mass will be held at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Garden City, S.C., on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 10 a.m. The family requests that donations to Street Reach Ministries of Myrtle Beach or Mobile Meals of The Grand Strand be considered, in lieu of flowers.
